Can anyone tell me if The Beauty Academies Correspendence Courses are a good idea?

They are recognised by The Guild and I was wondering if anyone has done a course or knows anyone who did course with this company and can tell me if they would recommend it.

Here's there website Beauty & holistic therapy training courses & nail courses: The Beauty Academy

A very confused geek who needs a little guidance.

Hi
I did the lash and brow tinting/shaping course at home by them and it was really good - the manual is easy to follow, and the dvd was really good - one of the best dvd's i have watched - regarding learning something.
Once you have completed all the questions, you send them in and then book in to have your work assessed by a tutor - so its not so much of a comletely at home deal - you do have to have your work checked by someone before you can gain a certificate.
My friend and I are booked in next sunday for a waxing course which Im looking forward too!!:green: :green:

I have not done a course with them but they do look quite good.

I suppose it depends on what course you want to do & if you feel that you could cope with distance learning. I am hopeless, always asking questions and have to see the treatment being done from all angles before it clicks into place !

I did the lash one - and the dvd shows the therapist up close doing the treatment - its quite slow so you can see every step at real time. Even the tweezing was good!

Also watched a PHD waxing vid last night (changing the subject) and that was informative too!

Many Thanks for your replies.

Do you think its worth me doing all of my courses with them instead of doing a mixture of training courses with other companies for example OPI and Jane Iredale?

Also, should I learn to drive first, then do these courses or the other way round. Would it be better to find work in a salon first?

Thanks Again.

Correct me if I am wrong but i didnt think you could get insurance if you do your training by correspondence - as you need a certificate of attendance for insurance.

You do have to go in for the assesment day on these courses - so the are recognised by insurance companies.

I have trained with them and they are fantastic, I actually went to them for the day for my waxing course. They do not teach in classes of more than 4, and when I went, there was only 2 of us on the course (on a sunday) and that other girl did not turn up - so I got 121 tutoring all day!!!:)

I waxed my tutor head to toe!! lol! The theory was brilliant - and my tutor gave me her mobile number to ring if I ever needed any help after my course.

I am going on to do other training with them, because I was so impressed the first time round.

I did and I really enjoyed it!

Sorry to put a downer on this but I did a 4 day course with the acadamy on Manicure/Pedicure & Nail Extentions of all types & Nail art by hand & spray. Although the women who took the classes were lovely & we had fun doing the course I still thought the course was well overpriced & came away feeling very unsure about it all.
We never got the chance to do a full set of nails to be assessed which I would of thought you would of had to have done to attain a qualification but they handed out the Diplomas one after the other. I'm very angry with myself for not finding this website before I did any training. I would not have wasted nearly £800 if I had. The cost of Training is not cheap so make sure you start on the right course. I didn't.

My advice is have a good search & get loads of opinions from others who have done the courses & done well after.

Hi

I have done a course with this company as I needed massage (Didn't do it at college!)
I had my A&P and background info i.e. knew the moves e.t.c so for me the course was a great way of getting my insurance. I also had 1-1 tuition (same as FiFi Charlie)
infact the academy bent over backwards to give me a date that suited us both! I am just starting to do my case studies for my C&G in massage with this company.

I strongly believe in getting 'proper' qualifications and what ever qualifications you do, you have to do the best training that you can for your budget or for what is available to you. It is your money that is paying for your training and you should ask as many questions before you start the course, such as how many people will be on the course?, how many people will I massage? What if I don't feel confident enough after I have finished the course? to get your moneys worth and to be properly qualified to work on paying clients. I think it's all about doing your homework!

Sorry went off on one there! so yes I can highly recommend The Academy.

I know you it seems quick and you don't get the classroom experience you might have with a college course but with practice (like all things) its great. Still months after doing a course you can still contact the trainers for advice, I can't want to do my next one!!

I sometimes think its best to learn from mistakes anyway, practicing on friends and family is a great way to do this.

They're actually really 'competitivly' priced when you look into others offering a similar service.

Hi, I have only just found this......

Dont want to put a downer on this either but i did a waxing course with them and although the teacher was lovely i also felt it was very rushed!
I did all my other courses at the local college and they have been great with VTCT and would have done the waxing to but the college kept canelling the course (twice in a year ) so i went there.

There was me and another lady, was going well then when it came to the bikini wax the other lady was in tears then the teather was showing me because it hurt so she had to stop! well i had to do it to pass so the teacher had to let me do hers as no one else there!!! I wasnt very happy but there.

I passed the course and felt so rushed all day.... have done loads of people since the course but first month or so after that course felt i couldnt charge people so did few people free.

Sorry to down things but i think alot of courses like massage, waxing and manicure & pedicure needs more than a day.
The other lady was doing... massage, man & ped, waxing, facial and eye lash tinting all in one week, took me 3 years to do my massage courses.

I also have done some courses with them, really enjoyed myself and came out with my diploma. i take it everyone that trained with them also did.
Just a question to those of you that have trained with them.........can you get insurance with this certificate? and are any of you doing the coty and guilds with them?

thanks xx

can you get insurance with this certificate?
There diploma is recognised with Guild, you'll be able to obtain insurance from them.

hi I did my spray tan course with the beauty academy. it was ok but I did go away feeling Id only been taught half of what I now know. my certificate was recognised by professional beauty direct, but I think the training should have been longer and in more detail.
