Is there a difference between the 2 then? I thought that the Mirana was just the 'newest' one and that they all did the same thing?

Now i'm really confused :confused::confused:

no the mirena releases progestrogen i think it is, but only localy to the womb. THe other is a copper coil, i dont really know how it works, but its no good if you have heavy periods as it can make them worse!!

best place to go is the family planning centre, as they are more helpful than the docs alot of the time.

We can only tell you our experiences though, not whats right for you!!! :D

i have had a nightmare with contraception.

if i take the pill i turn into not so nice mummy, mega bitch wife!

if i take the injection i bleed constantly never stopping which considering it lasts 6weeeks it's a pain in the ass.

Condoms are about as good as nothing!

so this left me a problem.my doctor for years keep'd saying go and have the coil fitted, but i always refused up untill last year.
i decided i would give it ago but was then worrying cause someone said it really hurts having it fitted .
Anyway because of the problem i get with the pill i had to have the other one, not sure of the name but it does have the coppper around it! i was told it would give me heavy periods which yes it has but they only last about 4 days.
i was given the option of having it for 12 months 5 years or 10years. i sat and thought well if it really does hurt i don't want it happening that often so choose 10 years. it really is the best thing i have done. i dont have to remember to take my pill or go to the injection apt, which i quite often forgot about!:smack:
it was abit painful but no half as painful as giving birth which would have been the other option lol!

hope this helps!

I might just get me wynciette pj's, bed socks and big thick dressing gown out, won't be a problem then!!!!!:lol::lol:

no no no no thats no fun!!!! :green:

OMG now I feel such a fool. When I had this fitted I didn't realise it stopped visitors, I have been to the doc's demanding HRT thinking I was changing prematurely. Thank God for Geeks!!!!

Just to let you know that the new Mirena coil is plastic, not copper. Just in case I have missed it in the above posts!

I am on it because of the heavy periods and I was passing out through the pain; like I said earlier it's not stopped my periods, I am spotting and having them monthly but the pain has totally gone, so for me, it's a success.

My hubby has also had the vasectomy! It's purely for the pain in my case.

Wishing you luck with whatever you decide to do.

I am a pharmacy technician so have a fair bit of knowedge bout this. Be careful ur not confusing the mirena with the old fashioned copper coil (known as 'the coil') which contains no hormones and no-one really knows how it works, but it isn't that effective.

The mirena is the most effective form of non-surgical contraception known to man, almost 100%.

For more info, log onto Medicines, and type in 'mirena', the site is a collection of the patient information leaflets you get in with your prescription medicines, so you can read yours before it's even prescribed! We use this in the pharmacy to print out spare leaflets, so it's completely accurate!

Hi sherubs,
a friend of mine went to her doctor to discuss contraception, and when it came to the coil he told her that the metal part of the coil will detect the foetus and gets rid of it. I think you should question your doctor further (in a nice way of course) and ask how EXACTLY the coil works. Goodluck and I hope this is educationalo and helpful :)

the metal part detects the foetus????
sorry babes a little more info is needed there as this is not how it works as the mareena coil is implanted with the same stuff as the implant in the arm so this tricks the body into thinking it is already pregnant so doesnt release and egg my friend has had these for about 15 years and is very happy with it

With the old style metal coil this is how it worked. It stopped the fertilised egg from implanting in the uterus. The coil and the mirena iud are NOT the same thing. This is where people are getting confused. The mirena is a progesterone implant same as the implanon implant they put in your arm, except in a lower dose. The coil is a metal coil with NO hormone that stops the egg implanting in the uterus.
