Hi - I've been thinking about this for a while.....I'm starting to offer holistic facials and I'm trying to decide if extractions should be part of it.....I've read fors and againsts and I'm still unsure. What do you do and what are your thoughts? Also the my old salon didn't use a facial steamer, while in any other salon I've always used them.......again steamers yes or no...

We dont have a facial steamer in our salon however I wish we did.The facial we do allows no time for extraction or steamers.I sometimes will do a bit of extraction but its a bit of a push on the time scale of things.I would have a steamer plus include extraction as an added on treatment. We have clients who regularly need extraction of blackheads so it would be a real bonus in my opinion to have this treatment.HTH

I have an 'extraction facial' due to blackheads... no steamer is used... the little tool used to get the blackheads out works very well but by god it's uncomfortable, I find myself pulling away from her lol...
It does the job though and I'm pleased with the results :D
If using a steamer makes the extraction easier then I'd personally prefer that!

Do they use any heat prior to using the little tool used on you(called a comedone extractor)? It wouldn't be so painful if they did as this is what opens the pores prior to the extraction of the blackheads.

no heat is used at all...
I was assuming that the products she used helped to open the pores???

Heat is the best way to open pores,it would be far less painful and much easier for the extraction.Ask your therapist to use a warm flannel or steamer next time. You will be amazed at the difference.I would never do an extraction without first opening the pores with a hot flannel.HTH. There are masks that create heat and certain microcurrent facials(called a Galvanic facial) that open the pores and rid the skin of blackheads and impurities, but a steamer or hot flannel is what a lot of therapists use for basic comedone extraction.

I do steaming as part of my facial plus extraction where needed, most clients find the steaming very relaxing and if i went for a facial and didnt have them removed (not that i have any of course!!) i wouldnt be too happy. I would say go for it. hth x

I think extraction should def be offered as an extra because only a percentage of clients will need it and also you will need to allow extra time. As pointed out heat is needed or otherwise the extraction can damage the skin and it should not hurt either. I use aromatherapy oil added to v hot water then soak cloth and apply as a compress also on the neck and shoulders with medium pressure i would do this about 5 times to relax the client and create a beautiful aroma i like geranium or lemon in particular. Then using a comedone extractor gently remove blackheads. Hope this helps

I couldn't agree more Nikki.A normal facial just wouldn't allow time for steaming and extraction. We use Darphin in our salon and this involves cleansing, tone, exfoliation,Shiatsu (pressure points) lymphatic drainage then mask. There is no real place to fit in the steam/extraction.It would have to be an add on as you like you said not everyone needs it.I love Geranium and orange as a blend for when I do massage. My absolute favourite, not that its used in with a facial in our salon but it's lovely.

I've always agreed with using steam for extractions. The last salon I worked in the owner '...i've been in the business for 20 years so i should know...' wouldn't use steam becasue she thought the products should be enough to open the pores??? Plus the younger girls just out of college were afraid of it:!:

Hi. I'm quoting you so I don't need to repeat it. Exactly the same here!

Just an idea I just had for people short on time...couldn't you steam during the cleanse and tone? or also during the exfoliation if using and enzyme peel (as heat speeds up the enzyme reaction)! Just came to me although I've never tried it. I guess it would just be something a bit different! :)

in my opinion - if you steam or not, when doing the consultation - with massive magnifier lol (only joking) if you need to extract then extract, if not, why go there flower - steam helps - of course it does, but i always use steam, whether i extract or not, also makes the client feel like they getting more than they actually are

I had an extraction facial on monday. they didn't use a steamer - a few hot towels ( which were just warming in a slow cooker )and my pores were unblocked no problem. Think the products help soften them though.

did you have an extractionas well or was it not needed after using the products.

The steamer definetly aids in the ease of extractions... however, hot towels can get the same effect, and they feel wonderful.

Extracting a comedone is ok... but you should never extract pustules.

We offer a relaxing facial that does not include extractions. We also offer a facial that does include extractions.

Another interesting question - how do you all feel about extracting milia?

Milia needs to be extracted using a sterilised needle.I have no problems with extracting these but will not touch around the eye area for obvious reasons.

I agree 100% with this statement. Sometimes they come quite easily, but if you have to force it, I would leave them and use daily home care and regular facials to treat them.

I had my comedones extracted and she seemed to get rid of quite a few. It was a karin Herzog pore draw facial. I think the products just help to soften them so they come out easier, and obviously the hot towels help this too.
