Hi there everyone. I'm totally new to the forum and would appreciate any advice from others who may have been in my situation. I'm 48 and had a long and stressful career in office work and looking to change career totally and considering a cnd training course with a view to starting up a business from home.

My concerns are whether I'd be any good at it as although I love having my own nails done, I e never actually been any good at even painting my own nails and have never considered myself creative. But for some reason I am drawn to learning about nails and think it would fit into the life I'd like to have and enable me to work from home.

I'm even more concerned about being too old to be going into such an industry and whether I'd manage to build up a business with my own clients.

I'm prepared to work hard and have done lots of research in setting up a business and thought of all the factors and costs involved. It's just taking that final leap of faith and paying out for a course which is a lot of money. And none of us can afford to waste money! Was thinking of building up clients alongside the day job initially until either I can stand it no longer or my business takes off.

Have a few willing friends and family willing to allow me to practice on them so that's not a problem. However after I've used up my training kit I have no idea how much products cost as I can't find this out it seems until I've been on the course with cnd.

Any advice and comments would be much appreciated. Thank you.

There's no guarantees in life so sometimes you have to trust your instincts and just go for it. If you train whilst working in your main job, it's just like having a hobby really. Once you gain a decent size clientele, you can give up the day job. :)

I retrained in hairdressing in my forties after a long and successful legal based career because I fancied a complete change. It's worked out well for me.

In my opinion, you're never too old to retrain. If anything, you have a lot more life experience than some of the newbies who have gone from school to college and into their own businesses with little or no knowledge of work and life.

And in regards to being able to afford it, whether you know how much it costs or not there will be extra costs you don't plan for usually, and it is always going to be a risk.

When I started I couldn't paint a nail without getting it onto the cuticle, but practise makes perfect! Though, saying that, I do still sometimes end up with polish on my forehead somehow!!

If it's something you're passionate about and think you could do well at, then why not? Why go through life doing a job which pays the bills when you could have that AND enjoy it?

Best of luck!

I don't do nails but there is no such thing as too old! X

I was on a course recently with a lady in her 60s. She had previously been a barrister and was retraining in beauty. She was doing really well and starting to build a solid client base, she said she loved it and just wished she had done it 30 years ago.
Go for it. Xxx

Never too old to learn! I am in my late 60s and I discovered forums - what a fantastic way to keep learning - go for it and good luck.

... My advice Practice practice and then practice some more.
Perfection starts with passion and practice is my Moto.
I qualified in beauty years ago and iv had the opportunity to start VRQ Level 2 hairdressing at 42 ... And I'm loving it ... You're Never too old to learn something new.
