Hi guys,

I done a year NVQ1 hairdressing at a local college a few years ago and left after finding it hard to learn alongside 16 year olds. I since went to work in an office to earn some money and now wanted to get back into hairdressing now I have more funds but wanted some advise on who to train with.
Any advice is much appreciated

Thanks

Can you not return to the college you attended before? You'll find in most salons there's 16 year olds/teenagers that you'll need to work alongside, especially when trying to gain experience. tbh i don't understand why the age group of your classmates stopped you from going for your goals to be a hairdresser

This is my first posting on this forum, but just wanted to say I think you should go back to college.

I left school and went straight into a salon as a junior training on the job, I loved it but a new owner took over and decided to send us on day release to college. I did one day, hated it and left. Big mistake, I regretted it later.

Im now 34 years old and have applied to go back to college in September this year to do my NVQ 2 properly. I will be working alongside school leavers the same age as my eldest daughter. Yes I fully expect it to be strange at first, but I want to qualify and this is the only way to do it.

At the end of the day age is just a number, we will all be starting from scratch, all doing the same thing and will hopefully all get along and with a bit of luck have a laugh along the way. Everyone will be out of their comfort zone and no doubt the school leavers will feel strange learning alongside adults as well. Its a learning curve and if you want it badly enough you should just bite the bullet and go for it.

I agree you just have to make some adjustments to work along side younger students. Were there no younger people in the office job?

i have done a few courses at Vidal Sassoon academy over the years and in all instances fellow students have ranged from around 19 to someone in their 50s. More recently I was a the upper end of the spectrum. Became a sort of mother figure for them and was treated very respectfully by my trainers.

To be honest, if I had some money behind me that is the route I would take again and again. Expensive but wow so worth it.

Thanks for the advice. My father owns a barbers which he'd like to pass his position to me..so I wouldn't be doing ladies hair other than going mobile but would like to learn both anyway. I guess I should ignore the age and just get on with it. Will look at local colleges again. I just wanted to see if anyone had gone to independent schools in London etc
