Hi all

Im a salon owner and have 2 girls that work on a self-employed basis and Im wondering what the industries views are on firstly training self-employed staff i.e. I want them trained in semi-perm eyelash extension but who pays for the training? I feel like I should pay as its my salon but then they are self-employed and could end up just leaving after being trained (although they have been with me for a number of years). Plus if I left it up to them they may not be willing to shell out the money for the training.

Also Im looking to do a big marketing drive but not sure what happens to the girls commission rate (50%) when we offer discounts. Do I pay them 50% of the overall treatment price or do I pay them 50% of what the full price treatment would have been without the discount and I take the hit of the discount?

Any advice on these would be greatly appreciated

Do you supply all the products? If so and you have sent them on training days in the past I would pay for this also as they may not actually want to do the training. I paid for training for my therapists who were self employed but (whether people agree or not) if they didn't stay with me I kept their certificates. It worked well to be honest and didn't cause any hassle. If they wanted to take the certificate they had to then pay for them

I think that this is the best way forward. If you want them to do the training to enhance your business, then you could always agree that if they leave within say a year, that they buy the certificate off you for half the course price if they want it.

I do feel sorry for salon owners when they lay out a load of money and the staff leave. I asked my insurers who the certificate belonged to and they said it would be the person that paid for it. I doubt that would stand legally as the certificate is awarded to the person who did the training. It's a tricky one.
