Hi there, quick query. My daughter has started training with toni&guy as an apprentice hairdresser. Today she has received a bill for £269.26 for a kit. £176 of this is for a pair of scissors. I understand that for decent scissors you paya good amount but surely for a trainee pair this is excessive. She has had to purchase the kit from them and had no choice in the scissors that were ordered. Is this right? Any advice very much welcome. TIA

That does sound very expensive. We had cheapy scissors when training (less than £40) which was sensible as you tend to drop them occasionally in the early days and cutting mannekin heads can blunt them quickly.

My first decent pair cost about £150. I certainly wouldn't use a good pair for training as they could get 'borrowed'.

Do they have T&G monogrammed on them? I know Sassoon scissors are expensive but again, I wouldn't buy them for training purposes.

A college kit is probably around £130 these days (inc. scissors). However, as your daughter is paying a lot more, I expect the quality of the tools to be much better. Personally, I'd rather use cheaper stuff for training and choose my own (better) tools after qualifying.

I guess your buying into the whole brand image with T&G.

I can only tell you about the set I bought Saki Makoto Student Hairdressing Shears/Scissor Set online for £131.83 delivered. These were recommended to me by my hairdresser as the previous ones she was using had completely lost it's edge and Becky was getting so frustrated using them. You can look for yourself on sakishears.com/uk to check out their prices.
