Trying different gel polish

I have just started out and currently use IBD just gel and I can not get on with their lighter colours using 5+ coats and still find them transparent even after giving them a shake.
I'm wanting to try lighter colours from a different brand would it be ok to just buy a couple of colours to try with out having to buy their top and base coats and just use IBD ones?
Dont want to spend a fortune on another brand for me to not get on with them

This is absolutely fine for colour pops if you're just wanting to try out new colours. I sometimes do this on my own nails as well if I have some unmatching bottles, however I would never do this on a client.
