Trying out brunette hair?

Just popped over from the nail/beauty forums as I dont do hair, but have a quick question.
I have always been blonde (quite bright before but have recently toned it down a bit so it loloks more natural).
But....I really want to know what it would be like to be a brunette, but I dont want to have my hairdresser put a permanent on it in case I dont like it.
So what if I put a box colour on it (8 washes or so), or got my hair dresser to put a semi perm on it, would it slowly fade out so that if I didnt like it it would go back to my normal blonde?

Avoid any wash in wash outs...they can be advertised and sold as short term but can grab and not fade, depending on your shad you always run the risk of khaki when you go from blonde to brunette...trust your hairdresser! You could just Nip in for a consultation and see what your options are
