 I had a lady phone me today to ask if she could purchase some UV gel from me....Upon asking her why she said "I want to do my nails (silly me!) and I've had them done so many times I know how to do it myself now"......So I asked her how she planned to cure the gel once applied - she said "well how do I do that?" I told her she needed a lamp - "are they expensive?"she said  .

The conversation ended rather abruptly by me telling her that "No, I cannot sell you some gel it would be highly unethical as the product can be dangerous in untrained hands, and also, you can cause no end of damage to your own nails if you don't know what you're doing. " I suggested she go to boots and buy a set of something from there - and when she needed her nails sorting, call me back!! Unbelievable.....I obviously have wasted all the time and money I spent training when i could've learnt it all from having my own nails done...

people like that really annoy me, i dont know how they have the cheek to ask!!!!!!!!!!!! i wouldn't dare !

they are sooo cheeky and dont think there is anything wrong with it!

Just off down to Sally's to get some hair scissors - well I've watched my hairdresser cut my hair so many times that I know exactly what to do - -- don't I??? Same principle, and perhaps you could give this sort of reply to people when they think they can do their own by watching others do their nails!

things like that really wind me up  - im glad you told her what you thought Sara- good on ya girl :)
i like the way you said to give you a call when they need sorting out

i know exactly what you mean, a mate of mine wanted her nails done but didn't want to pay out much for it, so bought.......the set from Argos, i think its the Rio Gel set.

Anyway a couple of weeks ago i saw her ina shop in town and had the usual conversation , how are you etc, then i asked her how her nails were. Funny thing was i noticed when she saw me she put her hands in her pockets. She was reluctant to show me, but said since doing her own nails, they have got really thin, flakey and break so easily and are sore. Well when i saw them i could see she had over filed them and done so much damage to them. they looked really bad and very red.

She then said that she wanted me to do them for her as she had a wedding at the weekend. I looked at them and said sorry, but i can't put enhancements on them it would cause more damage, i said she would have to let them grow out for a while and use cuticle oil on them and some strengthener to help nurse them back to health. The thing i sort of got a kick out of, was when she said she regreted not letting me do them in the first place. Its such a shame that some people are willing to compromise their healthy nails to save a few bob. I quess she learnt the hard way.

Some people really are amazing!

Well heres another .... did a set of nails on a real bad nail biter 2 weeks ago, and they looked lovely when finished :) ... told her it was best if she come back in a week just to have them filed and repainted ... she didnt. Yesterday she phoned to say she was "allergic" to them and was "getting them off but couldnt get the thumbs off" argh! i hear you say. She came in ... had bitten all the fingers off ... near literally ... but couldnt get the thumbs off .. they were on rock solid and still looked great ... she said they were throbbing ... (really!) she had tried getting them off ...now get this .... and even had a KNIFE under them trying to prise them off !! OMG! I said that they needed soaking but she wasnt having any of it ... so i filed them down so they were even with her own nail and away she went .... saying that when they were a bit better she would come and have another set! ooooohh noooooo dont think so

I have a similar story to Wendys. A client of mine who is also a very close friend bought a rio uv gel kit and was raving on about how much she has saved herself from buying this £50 kit.

She invited me around for a cuppa, as you do, and showed me her nails. She was very confused and disheartened and asked me the reason why 4 of her nails had fallen off. She had applied them 3 days previous!
1) Tips werent applied properly. Some were too small for her natural nail and some were too big, hanging over her sidewalls to be precise. Most of them were not straight either totally on the wonk.
2) The gel was not applied thick enough, looked just like one layer to me, all the tips that were on were poking through the gel and looked disgusting.
3) Lifting everywhere, right down to done 1 on one of her nails.
4) The nails that had fallen off were in a bad way, you guessed it she filed right into her natural nail.

She too has also learnt her lesson and told me she thought it looked easy peasy and would have a go herself. She now regrets her decision and is £50 out of pocket. I spose this is why there are sooo many of these kits on ebay, due to others also learning the hard way.

About 3 years ago, while working at a different salon, I had a client who started coming to me for fills. She liked her nails really short, and round.
Well, she told me that she had bought an acrylic kit from the local drugstore, and that she liked to do her own fills when she could!
So she'd alternate appointments, (get a fill from me, then do her own on the next one, etc,.).
Well, when she'd come to me, I'd take the polish off, and my goodness!!
CAN YOU SAY LIFTING?!?! They lifted so badly, pretty much down to zone 1. Then, they were always so thick!! They looked like M&M's!! Short, round, and thick! It was always a nightmare to work on her. But she thought she was being so smart, and saving so much money by only coming in for 1 fill, and doing one of her own.
Clients definetly shouldn't be working on their own nails!!

Wow! What's funny is that is the same way I learned to do hair AND nails (by watching my hairdresser and experimenting on my own nails) but, I would've never asked a pro for supplies, LOL!! Although many of us learn by sight, education and bookwork play a HUGE part. I think that people fail to realize that and tend to think this is just an exxagerated hobby.
