I had an interview today with a new salon owner that seemed really nice. She explained what days she needed a hairdresser and I would be the 'hair side of things' as shes only qualified in beauty. She also said I would be earned a commision based wage where I would get 70% and she would get 30 %.
I just wanted to ask a few questions about commision based work:
Am I classed as self employed?
Am I under the salons insurance or do I have to have my own?
She said I have to bring all my colours and everything myself is this true?
She said if I pay for products and keep receipts tax will reinburse me at the end of each tax year?
She said I dont have to pay any tax just a couple of pounds national insurance a week?
Do I need a contract with the salon owner in order to be insured?
If I cant afford products on certain weeks will the salon owner pay?

I know its alot but I just need some help the owner didnt seem like she had much of a clue to be honest, she seemed quite young. She told me she had other stylists but she sacked them as they didnt turn up on the weekend when she had full columns booked everything just seems a bit far fetched and im a bit worried as she wants me in to do a colour tomorrow and I havent signed a contract or anything yet.

this sounds odd. . . a commision based wage is fair enough, but if you are getting a wage you shouldnt have to provide anything if she is your employer. if she is employer she should be covering insurance, tax, national insureance etc etc. . . .
it sounds to me as if your describing a self employment contract where you are your own boss and the 30% you are handing over is like a rent. . .
if this is the case you would have to provide everything for yourself.
however to say you wouldnt have to pay tax is rather naive. . . if you are to be self employed ou will have to do your book keeping, register as self employed, pay you national insurance and either do, or get someone to do, a self assessment at the end of the financial year.
self employment is very beneficial if you can deal with all the business side of things but make sure you know what your doing and get a contract asap if you go ahead x

Thank you, Im just stuck as to whether to take the job or not it all sounds really confusing to me and with her bein a new salon owner I dont really think she had much idea as to everything, I might just try and find a job where there is a set wage as im worrying about money for colours, perming solution etc x

I was wondering if your self employed do you get reimbursed for products at the end of each tax year or is that a fib?
and do you have to get your own insurance?

its not really a reimbursmment as such, its a tax deductable expense. . . a very very basic way of looking at it is Total income - Total expenditure= taxable prophit. . . .yes you do have to provide your own insurance also. x

This seems very sketchy Hunny.....I was self employed on a 50/50 split 70/30 in your favour sounds very genourous too me. if you are paying your own national insurance then you are self employed and you WILL PAY TAX you have too. so that may be misleading I would check that out you will need an accountant too sort your end off year tax bill out although you do get a tax break you dont pay on the first few thousands u earn again check with Inland revenue..... Also you will be paying for your own products have you checked this out as some colours are expensive too have a whole range in may cost alot you will need a contract from her as a self employed stylist the nhf do these......Also be wary if she will pay for products if you cant afford too how will this work maybe she could lower the percentage too say 50/50 so she takes half off what you earn so if a cut and blow dry is £30 SHE HAS £15 AND YOU HAVE £15 and she supplies all products its just easier if ever you were too leave Really think about this and good luck!!!!!!

thanks for all your help i turned the job down in the end too much to worry about for me, i might aswell just go mobile and pay for everything myself and do it that way, thanks again xx
