Hey guys,
I am not a nail tech but i want to buy a uv lamp and some shellac colours to do my own nails at home.

been looking online at lamps and theres too many choices.

how many watts would you recommend for shellac?
and how long should i leave my nails under the lamp for?
and a good make? not CND because their lamp is so expensive!
would i be ok buying a cheap lamp off eBay?

If you do not posses a qualification in manicure/ pedicure gel polish then you will not be able to purchase genuine professional products. You should look at a retail brand such as red carpet manicure or others sold in places like supermarkets, super drug & boots they all have small lamps with the kits and instructions for consumers. Hope that helps.

As the above poster as said, you'll be unable to purchase Shellac, or any other professional brand, with no qualifications.

It is well worth getting a professional to do your nails. If you don't prep the nail correctly, you could end up with damage to your nails which could take a long while to recover, if at all.

I have a hairdressing qualification so I can purchase professional equipment
I know how to prep my nails and how to apply etc. I was just asking about a good uv lamp, as the one at work is CND and their lamp is too expensive.

Your a hairdresser yes but your not a nail tech. Therefore if you sign up to any official shellac distributer (Ellisons or sweet squared) they will not allow you to by the products as you do not possess the correct qualification.

Having said that you will no doubt go to ebay and risk buying fake products.

Could the girls at work not do your nails?

The CND Lamp is the only lamp that can guarantee a cure with Shellac, which you won't be able to buy from an authorised distributor because you don't have a mani qualification.

I think that, because you haven't been given the advice you want, you will just buy any old lamp and then you'll be risking under curing, which could then lead to an allergy, which means you won't be able to wear it (and quite possibly anything else) on your nails again.

With respect, I am not a hairdresser but I know how to stick a box colour on my hair. Won't create the same result and I don't know too much about the science behind it...I would be happy to do that but I would never purchase professional hair products and guess at how to use them.

I hope you see our point of view.

Thanks for your replies, I understand where you are all coming from.

However I am not going to just buy a lamp off eBay. I can get a lamp etc through work... I just have to tell them what I want and pay my boss back for it.

I could get them done at work but we are too busy and never get chance.

I was just wondering on a good make to be honest guys

Fair enough but no one on here will tell you directly as you are not a qualified nail tech.

However, it wouldn't take two clicks to read the forums and make your own mind up.

At the end of the day they are your nails. If you damage them due to lack of knowledge then don't blame the product.
