hi there im working in a salon just now self employed i give the owner 50% of my earnings just now but he wants to change it to a set weekly rent what do you think would be a fair amount to pay i only work 3 days a week i supply all my own prouducts inc colour ,blowdrying creams etc my own towels and we dont have any assistances or anyone to answer the phone i do all that myself a wee girl came in last week for a saturday job but he said if i wanted her to come in to help i would need to pay her myself which i was think i might do as it would help me out he said he wants me to come up with a figure for weekly rent but i dont have a clue could anyone give me any advice thanks stacey x

I would charge 40 a day for a basic chair rent like yours. Some salons don't do daily and will only rent weekly. What days you use the chair is then your decision.

I would think that chair rates vary across the country, so it might be worth trying to find out what the local average rate is, and then decide on how much you offer based on that.

Location, passing trade, your client base and your running costs all have to be considered.

You could be better off, rather than giving him half your takings...

Also if you are making the offer it may be an opportunity to include some of the things that is not currently included.. towels, telephone answering.. etc

Some of the other hair members may be able to offer you more information..

Good luck

Jack

i have a salon and rent out spaces, i charge £25 a day, i supply the backwash and salon products, they supply there own colour etc, you will be better off renting, obviously if your busy x

i rent on a daily rate cos im only part time and my hours vary, im 35 pounds a day, 25 rent and 10 towards juniours wages etc, i provide all my own colour, equipment and lotions sprays etc etc. towels are provided, and we all share the cost accordingly for shampoo as our salon has converted to all jus being self employed. im in a town 30 miles north aberdeen if thats any use for location averaging x

thanks for all your replys i know i dont know why he wants to change for 50 50 as some weeks (most weeks )im giving him a few hundred pounds but i will be alot better off (i think ) if its set amount every week i dont know if he thinks i will offer a few hundred and thats why ive to try and come up with a amount ?but if i could just give him 25 per day i would pay the saturday girl that would be great i am very busy i would say the buyest out of all the stylist that work in the salon the rest work for him but im the one who answers the phone most of the time (when i should me with my client )so maybe i should pont this out as well same with the towels ive got two sets so i bring them home every second day to wash so ive got even more work thanks again i will keep u all posted on how it goes thanks stacey x

well had an other meeting with the salon owner today i told him i would pay £25 per day and would go up to £35 aday if we got a junior and he said no he has decide after a long think that he feels it would be better to stay 50 50 but he still wont get a juinor i must still supply all my own stock from towels and shampoo to colours and styling products i feel as if im just being used last week i gave him £265 for 3days i just feel its alot of money to give him for very little back or im i was being greedy would love everyone thought on this thanks stacey x

Well he's not soft is he? So if you made about £1000.00 he would get £500 of that? for just 3 days work:|. No wonder he wants to leave it at 50/50. Christmas is just around the corner so he's realised that you will be really busy and making good money for him and it sounds to me like he doesnt want to miss out on the big bucks. He's the one being greedy hun, not you. I realize he has to make a living also but I think you would be financially better off renting a chair. Sure he's going to leave it at that cause he's onto a good thing thats why. If it was me I would look to rent a chair somewhere else in the New year:)

all i can say is LEAVE!! there is no way in hell he should be getting 50% when he supplies nothing but the chair, that is crazy. of course he was going to say no to the £25 a day, hes a greedy git and by the sounds of it would be losing out on hundreds. i pay £25 a day and work 3 days a week, and once a month i pay services which are towards water, electricity, phone bills, shampoo and general upkeep of the shop. You are giving away a lot of hard earned money to this man, and im not suprised he changed his mind! good luck i hope you sort it all out.

hiya thanks for your replys i would love to leave right now but with xmas only a few weeks away i think i just have to stick it out i have to find the right place to go to i dont want to keep messing my clients about by moving i know it would be better in alot of other salons but i feel that down about it just now i feel like just giving up and just working for someone again but i know thats just taking a step down the ladder and just playing it safe i keep telling myself just get on with it i dont like giving in but i feellike im been taken for a fool by a little horrible greedy man

50;50 and no other service. Greedy beggar. I worked for a salon on Saturdays only years ago on a 50:50 basis. Only thing I supplied was me. Everything else from them. Including juniors shampooing, drying off etc etc. Move to somewhere else or offer to buy him out.

Have you thought about going mobile? that way your not messing your customers around by changing salons etc you can go to them, would work out cheaper for you aswell x

Simply, he sat down and did the same math as you and realized that December was not the time to switch up the deal!!!! He can come out further ahead by staying 50/50
Guaranteed in January he comes round and tries to reoffer this deal. Terrible situation to be in, you are getting screwed.
Do you have a viable contract in place? If not I would be very heavy handed in pushing a chair rental contract, before December is gone.
