My new client is growing her colour out and has 2" of pepper and salt base 6. On the middle lengths and ends she has box hair dye base warm 6. She wants the middle lengths and ends to go lighter so it's not such a harsh line but she didn't want any colour on her regrowth. I was thinking of fine bleached balayaged sections . It's not going to look very nice but any help would be much appreciated.

How much time do you have until you see the client for her appointment?
Also how experienced are you with major colour work? I only ask because there's a few routes you could take to achieve a nice end result here :)

Her appointment is tomorrow afternoon. I'm self employed and have been for over 30 years so I have quite a bit of experience. I don't like using colour strippers much but am open to suggestions.

A professional colour remover would be a good choice as this will breakdown those stubborn pigments and make the rest of the proces much easier. But as you say, you're not keen then I would consider lightening the ends (coloured hair only) with your favourite bleach and maybe 6%work in very thin sections (thin enough you can read a newspaper print through it) completely saturate the hair and leave it to process for the maximum development time, or until a level 10 is achieved. Rinse and tone accordingly I would use wella, so I would opt for colour touch 8/81 + 9/16.
Your other option is to do a full head very fine highlights (just highlight ends) and then on the coloured ends that are left out apply an ash level 5. Process together and if necessary tone with a pale pearl violet or violet ash blonde :)

Wow, ronray, thank you so much for such an in-depth reply, and do prompt . That's helped so much.
You know, when you work freelance as long as I have, I know what to do but just don't always have the confidence to do it, thinking it might go wrong, but actually I should just follow my instincts. What you've said to do is what I thought, about highlighting the dark. Thanks again.
