Helloooo geeekville!!

I am due to start college this month (doing my NVQ2 hairdressing) and im looking to find a placement in a salon for the days im not at college.

If i was to walk into your salon what would you be looking for in a salon assistant?

What can make me stand out from the crowd?

all help is greatly appreciated :)

find a GOOD salon you can do an appretership with and ditch the college!!
in my 10 years exsperiance you will find it really hard to get a job after training at college. good salons like to have an aprentice you get first had exsperiance and a real feel for the industry! you tend to be kept in a bit of a safty blanket at college.
if you have set your mind on a college though!! you shoud be dressed well but not too over done(dont put your makeup on with a shot gun!!) make them see you are keen to learn and let them no you are well awera you have to work your way up and prove your self!! the more you put in to doing the ****ty jobs and be there to support the stylist the more they will trust you to help! at the end of the day it is there head the will roll if you mess up on a client so they need to no that you are reliable and pay atetion to instructions!!
good luck whatever you chouse!! you will love it!!

I really would love to do an apprenticeship but my age is against me! (19) which is why ive gone for the college option but only part time and am willing to do whatever it takes to get the experience i need! Even if it means working voluntary!

xxxxx

Ive had exact same problems and unfortunatly came to a dead end :( look through some of my earlier posts for help xx

I really hope you find something xx

Do you no reds in Sunderland!? They have a fab rep and you would get the best from a salon like that xx

I would love to go somewhere like that! But do they take acements while im at college because i dont think id be taken as an apprentice as im 19! Xxxx

some salons do prefer taking on older students as they have more of an idea of what they want and are less likly to drop out!! its worth a shot if they have such a good reputation you have to think of the best thing for you!! and if they dont they might even take you on volentary if that is somthing you would do!! xxxxxx

I am 25 with two young children started an NVQ 2 in a college in January ... No salon would take me on because of my age . I am now working volentree in a lovely salon and now i have proven myself to be deadicated I think i may be in with a chance of them taking me on instead of the normal school leaver.

So go for volentree I only do one day a week volentree buut obviously if the take me on paid work I will be there much more.

Fingers crossed

Oh great i'd definately do voluntary work just to get the experience behind me; i will definately give reds ago!

Show your personality!! But make it quirky and individual! But nothing too OTT!! and don't worry about going too crazy with your hair try to do some thing stylish but simple!! Depending on what your hair is like!?
Hair dressers are very visual so go for more statement than too fussy!! Xxx

I was thinking a nice casual dress with tights and flats?

My hair is plum coloured very long and thick!!

Maybe just loose curls or waves "//
