Living in the dark ages as I do, I don't have central heating in my house (I've never liked it)! Instead in my cottage I have two wood/coal burning stoves, with no heating upstairs. Personally, I'm not that bothered by the cold!

Men dont feel the bloody cold like we women do,
its just not fair

So now forgive me for saying this but I HATE being cold and freezing to me is unbearable. So I have to ask.. if you're freezing then why bother having the heating on at all?? I know that you'd obviously be a lot colder if it was off completely but you're still paying something for your bills and yet you're still freezing so why pay anything for nothing iykwim? :)

This way, the pipes won't freeze...

The only thing I cut back on is expensive food! I buy whats in offer or cheap and halved my spending there. I could never do with a cold house. I have three small kids too so it wouldnt be nice on them.

We have electric storage heaters which means I need to be a weather forecaster to know wehther to put them on the day before or not.
I have a woodburner in the lounge & the storage heater is on in the lounge. But not on anywhere else in the house just now - bbbbbbbut it's cold in the hallway where my pc is - may just pop the heater on for tomorrow's geeking!
In my conservatory I have a plug in oil filled radiator on low over the cold nights.
Just been looking for an electric blanket as I love a toasty warm bed to get into.

Bargain to be had in Homebase just now - energy saving light bulbs are 49p each of 5 FOR A £1 - pushed to boat out and bought 10 yesterday & changed all the lights I could. They are a little dimmer, but hell, if it saves money!

As you can see from my user title, I can't bear the cold!

That said, I won't have the heating on all day, but if it's chilly, I'll put it on for a while, just to take the edge off iykwim.

For those of us who pay our gas and electricity bills via monthly direct debit, check that you're not paying too much. I heard on the wireless that the companies are using our money to ease their cash flow issues by increasing the monthly amounts by way too much.

That's because of our naturally stronger constitution!!!

Two words:

Man Flu

:p

I've heard 'bird' flu is a lot worse & seems only to be cured by snuffling away on the sofa under a duvet whilst sipping hot chocolate & watching god awful 'chick flicks'!!

I heard this on the tv the other day too...

Long time since I heard the radio referred to as 'wireless'....

PMSL i wish i could get away with doing that,
the only thing i snuffle under when i have a cold is a face mask while sitting at the nail desk doing nails

Now I'm pmsl at the mental picture I have in my head Louise

Same here... there's no such thing as girl flu, bird flu or any other kind of female flu in this house. Well as far as hubby's concerned there isn't, I just get ignored and asked how long tea will be. Hmph..

Gah!
I grew up with my grandparents who were verrrrrr old!
Victoria was still reigning when my grandmother was born!

Last night there was short segment on the news interviewing a local retailer about the fact he can't keep wood stoves and inserts in stock. He speculates he will be out completely before Christmas. We have a wood stove in the basement family room that keeps the entire basement and half the main level warm. There is also an insert in our great room on the main level that keeps the rest of the house toasty. We keep the thermostat set on 60 degrees but forgot to bump up the setting for the AC...oops...it came on Friday night so we reset that in a hurry. Thankfully we have several 80-100 foot tall trees that have died in the past couple years due to a late spring freeze followed by a drought. It broke my heart to lose about 50% of our trees but we are making good use of them for firewood. Probably have enough for the next few years. The hard part is getting the wood split and stacked...even with a log splitter. Can't tell you how many nails I have broken and too many bruises to count. Of course I have 4 mastiffs to keep us warm too. They certainly like to cuddle. The other thing we have definitely cut back on and many we know is going out to eat. People seem to be doing more pot lucks for gatherings and eating at home for regular meals too. The restaurants in my area seem to be suffering for sure.

I have these too, well, I say 'these' I actually only have one in my front room. I'm all electric and it's a 3 bed house. I don't generally use it though (actually this'll be the second year I haven't bothered to turn it on it's such a waste of space and energy!)

Bargain to be had in Homebase just now - energy saving light bulbs are 49p each of 5 FOR A £1 - pushed to boat out and bought 10 yesterday & changed all the lights I could. They are a little dimmer, but hell, if it saves money! That's great value! I got some free from an energy website which I think might have been British Gas (tried to find it but couldn't - sorry :(

So, I bought us a calor (read portable - not all gas bottles are equal!) gas fire with a bottle for a tenner out of the freead paper before the winter this year. We weren't sure how much gas was in it but it lasted us about a month. We just had to go out this afternoon and swap it for a full bottle which cost us 25 quid (then we had to go back and buy a new connector for a tenner as out one was really old ). It does warm the house up, although it's 3 beds it's fairly bijoux :) and I reckon with a bit of conservative use mainly in the evenings, as that's when we're all home, it'll last about 8 - 10 weeks, so not bad really. We do have a small lecky heater too but I'm loathed to use that.

Other than that I sit there with my track bottoms a big t-shirt, a hoodie cardi (with the hood up!), my snuggley bed socks, slippers and big oversized fleece dressing gown. I'm toastie then :)

Also another thing I do is close all the curtains at dusk and I'm going to have a go at making some of these Snakes - Save Energy and Money :green:

I have double glazing but it's about 15 years old so not that efficient and out roof is insulated (again old so not that efficient) and there is a draught that comes down my stairs into the living room and I'm buggered if I know where it's coming from, so I'm going to take a look see round the charity shops to try to find a long curtain that I can hang at the foot of the stairs to stop that too.

Think I went a bit off track there :o but I don't like being cold either and at the moment my calor gas is on so I'm warm!

Bloody energy bills!

xx

Im a bit off both, If im on my own this house is like a furnace if other half here its more like an ice rink as he is always HOT and complains about the bill.

Infact its probably why ive got flu at moment as I can wake up in night and my ears be numb from the cold as he has the f ing window open :irked::evil:

Same here, my other half is tight. So when me and kids are at home by ourselves i whack the heating up and when he comes home from work i turn it down. He he x x x

I was away for two weeks recently and had the heating coming on for an hour a day just to keep things ticking over iykwim. My daughter was looking after the cat, coming in twice a day to feed her and make sure all was ok. Anyway when I rang home to see how everything was, she said it had been so cold she had put the heating on CONSTANT so Charley would get cold. FFS she is a cat and has a fur coat!!!
I did get her to turn the damn thing off though.

I hate being cold too but am sat here geeking at the moment with my coat on and I can hardly type because my fingers are so cold. I have only been in a short time though but the heating has now been turned on.

When my OH comes in he will say it is too damned hot and put his shorts on. I think he has a wonky thermostat.
