Hi I did a client the other day and her free edge nearly doubled back to her epyonichium! with a big gap

I taylored the tip to leave more of of the well area on one side so there was something for the tip to adhere to but I have never seen this before, I am hoping it was enough to anchor to but I guess I will soon find out if not...

But for future reference as anyone got any tips on how to conquer this kind of problem

Glad you asked that, I manicured my sis yesterday and she has a really long free edge, just like my mum. She doesn't like extensions so I know I won't have to do those, but I had to stop and ponder how to file them :?:

She is also lucky/odd that the white colouring of her free edge actually starts quite far back on her nail bed, meaning that even when her nails are short she still has a lovely white smile line, somehow without making her nail bed look short. And her pinkie nail is the dinkiest little nail you've ever seen.
You'd never know up until 5 years ago she was a dedicated nibbler!

Anyway, from now on she has promised to be my first paying customer! I've done two manis on her so far, and she's asked if she can have one once a week 'cos she works in events management and has to look presentable for clients (off to Ascot tomorrow - jammy moo!)
Sorry, I've digressed - was just seconding the thought of how to deal with people whose free edges go a long way back :D

Come on Geeks, some of you fab and groovey experienced nail technicians must be able to help me???

I have been trying to picture this and I can't.

Explain again to me ... at the moment I am getting a picture of a nail free edge doing a u turn and growing backwards? I have never seen anything like that.

Jeepers now you've posted I understand why it doesn't make sence

if you held your hand out in front of you and looked and the free edge it vertually has no contact untill halfway down the side wall when it the so the free edge runs all the way around the nail almost come up to the epoynichium - i guess from all the years of picking...

So when I placed a tip there was no where for the ears to attached to as the corner of her free edge was so low down her nail..

I would have scultped but there was no real free edge other an on the side of the nail :|

I hope this makes better sence.. :o

Ah now I see.
Oh yes I have seen this and it is a bit awkward for tips but then even sculpts do not look as pretty on this type of nail unless painted!!

Shorten the nail as much as you possibly can, even if you remove all the free edge. This will allow the tip to cover more of the sidewalls. There may still be some little gaps where the tip is hanging on thin air, but if you thin out the well and tip, the amount of product should make up for the weak spots.

You can sculpt this nail too. Again, shorten as much as possible and then overlay as normal.

These nails are normally not a pretty shape and look much nicer painted. For some, pink and white just highlights and makes the nails look more unattractive. Offer polish to these customers and their nails will look to the world as normal.
