I don't think it is meant to be disrespectful. I just think it is the way in general now. I hate text speak but I think it is a generation thing. Most youngsters now text speak. I really struggle sometimes to decifer some messages on facebook.

There are a lot of people who think I am a fuss pot the way I like to use the correct grammar and punctuation, etc. I guess I am just too old to appreciate all the abreviations, etc.

Just remembered another one that annoys me. Actually a friend just text and it reminded me, they had written in the text;
' i should of let you know' - aargh drives me mad!

I am the first to put my hand up on this. My spelling and grammer is pits..!!

But I google my spellings when I write in a post, then read and re-read the post to see if it sounds fluent enough grammer wise. Sometimes I miss a few bits, but when I realise, I always go back and edit it.

Although I am guilty of this, I don't feel this thread is directed at me though because I know I try. Now that is the difference I think.

It certainly is

I hate all the slang and text speak, but as far as bad spelling goes, I like to make allowances for people. Yes, I do notice it and I cringe at times, but not everyone has had good schooling, which isn't their fault. xxx

I agree Kim, but the post above and my comments sum up my feelings perfectly. I have every sympathy with the dyslexic, but for everyone else, whatever the reason it doesn't hurt to try.

Mmmm shouldn't there be an apostrophe and an 's' there!

One that drives me mad is when people put; ' to air on the side of caution', instead of 'err on the side of caution'.
I think some people are just not great at spelling. It's not their fault if spelling isn't their forte.
Text talk drives me mad though as i have a job to understand what they are saying sometimes :irked:

Whoops!! Hands up and guilty as charged!!! :) No one's perfect ;)

This is such a nice thread! No one is getting personal or over heated. It's just some gentle points.

I don't think that a lack of respect is intended in any post. I do think good manners play a part but this comment from Martin Duffy:
I'd be lying if I said I didn't perceive people differently because of it!

is very true.

I believe professionalism is so important. Bad spelling and bad grammar is not a good representation of a 'professional'. This site works hard to promote 'professionals' and it is viewed by a much wider audience. The nail industry has a hard time in general and needs all the help it can get!

oh what a great thread!!

I for one hate text speak (only because I have to ask my daughter what half of it means :irked:) but common grammar mistakes that have already been outlined gripe me too. I have seen a fair few websites with the very same mistakes, 'their' instead of 'there' etc. I just think who on earth can take that person serious as a professional. I take the same view Martin gave as well regarding how I would view that person.

Perhaps I'm a becoming a really grumpy, grumpy GOW too :green:

This one I have to agree with too , and some people do struggle but I think a lot of people (including me do try their best).
I am now thinking ... does that full stop go inside those brackets or outside ?
As regards spelling , I do tend to get muddled up with words like
(their / thier / pieces /peices , advice advise,

also I am guilty of using a completely different word or completeley revising the whole sentence that will cover for the same meaning if I forget how to spell the original chosen word,
also I will put a smiley or something if I think it should be something else like a full stop ect :) I also google spellings first

It is the text type I just don't get
I had one on my mobile the other day saying " u sed 2 cum @ 7 ? "
Also I have no spell checker, (or is it spellchecker ?) also does that question mark go inside the brackets or outside ?
and if I check over everything , the person is usually fed up waiting and goes off line  x minky

My pet hate is when people spell 'lose' as 'loose'.

Well I'm definitly guilty of bad grammer ans slipping into txt or slang speak. As i txt quite alot and use slang on Bebo & Facebook I sometimes forget! I had to rewrite a message to my enlish friend the other day as I had written it all in Fife slang forgetting she would'nt understand most of it lol
I think it is a generation thing most people my age and below tend to do this, but not on purpose to annoy anyone, english seems to be more about writing creativley and understanding things than advanced spelling or grammer (well at my school) sooooooo not our fault lol
I see alot of spelling errors and using the wrong word (grammer right?? lol)
but it does'nt annoy me at all xx

i think you made some good points there sarah.

if i was looking at a companys website i would expect it to be all present and correct. i have noticed spelling mistakes on some really high profile sites and been quite surprised.

however on a forum, what we type is a conversation and i feel as such it is more friendly and less formal.
if i were speaking to someone face to face, i wouldnt pull them up on every mispronounciation or instance of bad grammar.

i for instance rarely use the capital button, because until i came to the forum i had never touched a keyboard in my life and my typing skills still only extend to 2 fingers at the most.

I understand that it is a generation thing and no one is asking anyone to be perfect.

What the GMG does ask of everyone is to keep in their mind that this is a professional site and people who claim to be proud to be a part of it should make an attempt at least to uphold the site rules and to keep our site looking professional. That means no text type and sorry but I think it should mean capital I's as well and at the beginning of sentences.

Anyone can make a mistake on a web site or anywhere else ... it doesn't mean they can't spell it just means they made a mistake ... it is the repeated action of doing something when one has been invited nicely not to do it, that to my mind shows disrespect and a lack of pride in just what we have here.

I agree with the text talk, but i dont mind small spelling mistakes.
Im not the best at spelling but as long as the post is easy enough to understand and read it doesnt bother me.

I too can't stand text talk, even when I text my friends I use proper English lol. It does take me longer to read a text that has been written in text talk as I have to try and figure out what they're actually saying.

Another one, again, is when a post has been written and there aren't any fullstops, I feel like I'm going blue by the end of it as I read it in one breath lol.

Spelling mistakes I look over as, has been said, some people just aren't very good at spelling and I agree with Kim that it's down to schooling. Only a couple of months ago we had our parent teacher meeting and my hubby went in to find out how Chloe was getting on. Now Chloe is 11 years old and she does have some trouble with her spelling. I asked hubby to bring this up in the meeting and her teachers reply was that it only makes up 1% of their final mark so don't worry ! So it seems spelling is not such a big thing anymore.

I read and re-read my posts before I submit them just so I know they're right as I don't want people to think I'm stupid and can't spell .

Why do so many not use the spell checker??? It's so easy! Then you don't have to worry about it at all.

I don't have a spell checker (not here for this site) and I don't know how to get one either.

I can spell, my grammer is good and I can type in correct paragraphs, but I am more than a little techno ignorant!:lol:

So please, can someone tell me how to install a spell checker on IE? :green:
