hi looking for some opinions here today i had a client come in wanting a colour now shes been doing her own colour for however long it was about a number 2 heading towards 1 very very dark you could see all the colour build up so she wanted it bright red like rhianna i had a look and feel at her hair it was really dry and frazzled at the ends from straightners by the looks of it she knows her hair is bad condition so i explained that because of her hair being soooo dark and the condition soooo bad i would not be willing to colour it because

1. i cant guarantee the colour she wants
2. i dont want to be picking her hair up when its fell out
3. only way was to strip which i think would have took a good few times

so my question is what would you have done the reason im asking is because she then said at the end once id said no that she had been to a salon who told her they could do it no problem but it was a bit expensive so im just thinking what would you have done i really dont think i could have got it red xx

I think you made 100% right decision it's so hard to lift out home colouring especially that dark and with a lot of build up, she wouldn't have been happy when her hair didn't come out the way she wanted and I doubt it would have! Let the other salon have the headache and she'll probably come back to you when she realises you've been honest and they didn't do it the way she imagined! :)

haha thanks tillie it just got me thinking after it and i was like hmmmm what could i have done sometimes its better to say no but you know what some clients can be likethey want the impossible there was so much colour build up it was like that stained way you know where you look and know straight away its going to be hard to lift xx

hun i think you did the right thing , if someone else wants to say "oooh yeh we can do that " , let em get on with it ...
its their probs when they client is in a state coz her hair is either A awful , b no hair on her head

thats dee i feel better now that you have all said the same ;) i was just thinking after it you know maybe theres a technique that someone would do that i dont know aout lol x

i can remeber once fixing a womans hair after a salon said they could take her hair from a level 2 with god knows how much home dye on to a platinum blonde  in one sitting ,
needless to say she ended up asking me to fix it coz she looked terrible ... i ended up having to take her dark again coz i really didnt fancy trying to get her past the horrific orange stage i couldnt beleive they wouldnt sort it for her tho , just said well its blonde so there (it really wasnt )
lucky she had a short pixie crop and not long hair or it would have been truly horrific for her !!
i am quite reserved and would always air on the side of caution esp where color is concerned

yes dee you are absoloutly right caution instead of just saying yes so they sit their backsides down if anybody came in and asked to go from 2 to platinum blond no matter whats in their hair i would say you wont acheive it straight away.thanks for all the opinions i feel so much better now i know i defo did the right thing xx

Hi hun,
I would of told her exactly the same and offered her a conditioning treatment, and a trim/cut : )

hi endless yep told her to stop colouring it and to get it trimmed every 6 weeks to build condition up and to get some of the black out and suggested the paul mitchell strength shampoo and condition but she rather took this of me trying to flog her some shampoo and get money off her with a cut and blow dry lol she was determined to get it coloured she even said she didnt want it cut as shes trying to grow it in which i told her theres no point growing your hair in the condition its in just now never mind having it stripped etc you just cant please some people xx

Hahaha, no you cannot!! x

I had a client with black hair that she'd just coloured the night before to get rid of the roots and wanted the highlights she had bought a Groupon Voucher for (I hate these things, they are the bane of my salon life). I told her that the only thing I could use to highlight it would be bleach because of the colour on her hair. I then held a couple of strands of hair and pulled. They snapped. I showed her this on a couple of sections of her hair to illustrate just exactly what would happen if I put bleach anywhere near it.

I'd have said no to your client as well. If another salon will touch that then let them. It's your reputation. She's not going to go away and tell people that her hair was a state and she begged you to colour it. She'll tell them that you wrecked her hair.

yes exactly plus people will just be like god im not going there ohhh good god i can imagine the clients face when the hair snapped maybe this is what is needed for clients to be shown exactly what happens its annoying because sometimes clients just think oh il have that colour and il have the lovely colour too and forget this is all chemicals etc and dont realise the dangers xxx

My college tutor encourages us to do things like showing the client when their hair will snap. She ran her own salon and worked freelance for years before becoming a tutor so she's dealt with the "but I want this" kind of clients.

I will flat out tell someone that I will not have them snapping their hair off in my salon. End of story. |As professionals we have the final say, they might not like it at the moment, but ususally follow up in a day or so, asking what their options are. Good for you.

thanks alot everyone i knew i was right to say no but you know that way i doubted myself after it when i was thinking well what are the other salon going to do i did say to her when she was getting on my nerves with the i want i want i want i said look i could easily say yes no prob and take your money but from a professional point im saying no this went down like a lead balloon lol im glad you have all reasured me always rely on the geeks ;)

Darling you are the professional and I say to my girls, if in doubt leave it out. I'd far sooner loose money than get sued. You did the right thing and if the other salon is going to take that chance then be it on there heads. Stay confident and never doubt yourself. As soon as that client walks out that door it's a case closed but never sit and question yourself :)

I would of said the same as you.....if in doubt leave it out!!!

you did the right thing, at the end of the day your reputation means more ... they always say if you have done a good job a client will tell a few people but if it went wrong they would tell anyone who will listen :)

People want the impossible all the time, its like someone going to a personal trainer who is a size 20 wanting to be a size 8- and giving them one week to do it in...its impossible, and trying it will cause seriouse damage. Of cource you have done the right thing..its an impossible job, no one could have done it. So dont feel bad, feel confident that you know what you are doing xx

thanks all for reasuring me lol xxxxxx
