OK I know this question gets asked a lot about how long it should take to do a complete set of acrylic nails.

I have been getting some new clients who have come to me to do their acrylic nails. It takes me about 1hr 15 mins to do a complete set without any polish work at my fastest.

They say to me that some salons they have been to takes them 20-30 mins to do a set. Now these salons are not English so don't really want to state their origin or background but I know what sort of salon they are referring to.

I can see they are yawning or getting fed up but there is no way I can do a set in 30 mins. This is quite a lot of new clients that I have felt this from and never come back.
I am just really fed up and it's taking me 1 hr 30 min to do a set.

I don't know what else I can do to get faster. I have been doing this for few years so it's not like I'm new. I wish I could do it in an hour.
I know it's about quality not quantity coz I know someone is going to say that but I'm just not having anyone come back. The amount of times I've heard the discount salon only take 30 mins is really getting to me.

I'm afraid that's their decision and it's a completely different enhancement that you're offering so you won't be able to compete with their timing.

Personally I wouldn't be trying to reduce my time further if your comfortable with that as you'll end up stressed and unlikely to enjoy it.

What's the environment like that you work it? It it comfortable, pleasant and clean? My clients thoroughly enjoy their appointments and feel relaxed and pampered they leave.

I'm mobile and I allow 2 hours for a full set of acrylics with gel polish finish. Sometimes only need hour and half but rarely do under hour and half. I've accepted acrylics isn't my fasted point and I just let them know how long to allow. If they don't like it then they can go somewhere else. Don't feel pressured. I'd rather someone spent more time doing my nails than bang out a set in 20min that look bad xx

Thank you for your reply I see what your saying. I wouldn't of minded if it was one person making a comment but it's majority of them. When I ask them if the nail extensions that the other salon was applied the same way as mine they say that is done the same way. Tips applied with acrylic on top. I have my own beauty salon and work alone. The salon is very relaxing as I have a bhudda theme going on and soft music in the background. It's a newish salon and no one works for me so it's kept clean between each client and I sanitize everything in front of them. X

Hi thank you for your reply. 2 hrs seems reasonable to me. How long do you take If it was just tips applied and then the acrylic with no polish xx

Perhaps you need to rethink how you are advertising for new clients.
Advertise where the nss salon type clients don't look! Aim higher and more expensive

A little while ago I had an influx of clients like this and it really got me down. But I looked on here and on fb beauty groups and was relieved that I was about the same as most other techs. Im confident in my work so now ignore it but when i have a new client book in, I confirm the appointment with them, what they're having and the approx time it should take. If they don't like it they have the option to not make the appointment x

That's a good idea. Maybe I'll tell them exactly how long they are booked for. In that way they know how long it would take and not compare. Thank you x

It's possible that their products are different and also their application which severely cuts down on application time.
I now have many clients that had the same experience and now wouldn't ever go back. However there are others that clients have recommended on social media that won't be convinced to change. They aren't clients that I want to chase.

So I know lots of these salons are often accused of using mma in their enhancements but is that really the main / only difference - they are often head down , focussed and no chit chat so that prob makes them quicker. Alot of the nails I see from these places are super strong , (even when they are really long) thin , never Lift and are a nightmare to soak off - they are stuck on so well. I've also noticed they file differently , the acrylic seems softer - is this all down to mma based products ??????

Yes, mma sets like concrete so absolutely NO lifting (easy peasy infill) fairly thin due to strength of said concrete, takes ages to soak off because of the hardness of the product

But if you catch your nail in a drawer or something they will hang on to your own nail and rip your nail from your nailbed

Yes I believe all down to MMA. So hard they need drills to do the filing/shaping as hand files won't touch it - and they tend to do cuticle "prep" with the drill as well, thus speeding things up but not really offering the same calibre of service IMHO

Hi Meenax, I always tell new clients how long the set takes. It's up to them then if they want to continue with the booking which they usually do. You also mentioned that you have a lovely relaxing theme in your salon. This is great for facials etc but I found that for nails my clients felt it made the time seem longer. I just play the radio now for nails.

Hi I was told I am not allowed a radio due to TV licence :(

But yeah maybe the salon is too relaxing. Can't win lol. Xx

Really? I never knew that about the radio. I know, I went from panpipes and waterfalls to Beyoncé belting it out! Ha ha! Might be worth a try though!

If your in a salon if you play the radio or CDs you will need PPL & PRS music licences .... Roughly about £300 per year ....
I play ichill CDs (relaxing spa music) which are licence free. All my clients comment on how chilled they feel whatever treatment they're having

If it's any help I do express acrylics ( full nail applied with acrylic underneath ) and if I'm working quick enough I can get them done in half hour with gel colour! It's not a method everyone wants to do but my clients don't mind it has the same outcome as acrylics! Might be worth a try for the people who complain xx

What is this technique ? Not something I'm familiar with - I use tips or sculpt - what do you mean by a full nail over acrylic ?

Like a press on nail, so a full nail, and you apply it with acrylic underneath like a glue x
