Hi.
My boss renting a chair in the salon that I work in to a lady and she can do a set of acrylic nail extensions using tips in 35mins. I do a new set in 1 hour - 1hour 15mins depends on shellac application. He is saying I am taking too long.
What do i do? how do i compete with this?

Impossible to do a decent new set in 35 minutes!x

I think using the one ball method it is possible but he's being unrealistic expecting you to be able to do it too. And good luck to him finding staff who can!

That's what I thought. Thing is my boss is not concerned about quality only price and how many sets can be done in a day. He is also claiming she can do 3 Shellacs in one hour?
I have done this if three friends have come in together or I can do one client in 30mins by the time they settle into chair and everything.
She is supplying her own equipment on a 50/50 basis 4 days a week. She buys all her shellac from London for £7.
She starts Monday.
I asked if she is from an NSS salon but my boss isn't interested in that sort of thing.
I know this is business but I do feel disheartened my integrity hasn't been taken seriously as I feel as if i can't compete and I am not contracted.
My options are
look elsewhere
Or learn some of her techniques and gain speed.
Wait and see what happens and learn all I can.
I don't know?

Ah I was wondering if she would use the one ball method. Maybe I can learn this from her?

If you don't do any consultation with first time client, use e-file/drill and do no cuticle work and do one bead method then yes, you can do a full set in 35min.
I spend 1h 15 mins with every client for acrylics, 60% of them have had their nails done with NSS type style therapists... none of them have gone back and I charge £10-£15 more per set.

I think you can do cuticle work and one ball method. If your application is good enough you only need a buff and quick shape afterwards.
I think you need to ask yourself if you'd like to work under that pressure and I doubt there's much design or nail art being done.
I'd rather spend 1hr 30 on a set with the client choosing colours, glitters etc and having a set I'm proud of for more money than rattling through sets in 35 mins. How are tools and your workstation being sanitised, record cards being completed, consultation forms etc.
It's the creative part of being a nail tech that I love. That sounds like a production line [emoji20]

Well we all know she isn't buying genuine shellac for £7.

If she does a set in 35minutes and some fall off in a day is he going to be so thrilled to have her then?.

I work in an well established salon and we're constantly fully booked. My manager has won nail tech of the year etc. and we are allowed 2 hours for each nail extension appointment.
Quality of quantity!

This is a new set up. I have been there a few months. I set standards/time and price. I was under the impression that I was building from scratch. Now he has brought this other person in without telling me I only found out today. He has laid two girls off and taken one of my days off me. It's all about money. I feel I'm being sidelined or shelved.
It would be nice to see how she does a full set in 35mins.

I fail to see how a 35 min set can be a quality service. I've been doing nails 13 years+ and can bang out a set in an hour if I'm pushed but I hate the pressure and normally take 1.15-1.30 or longer if we're having a laugh which is often. I'm not in this for the stress!

35 mins? It's a joke! And would rely on the client having completely bare nails, easy to tip nails (ie not awkward shape or biter etc), you'd have to skip cuticle work (and conversation), use a large brush, one ball method and be pretty skilled at applying so it needed minimal filing.
And no polish/Shellac.

Your bosses view is extremely short sighted. As for 3 Shellacs an hour, yes maybe if you were very hasty, if they knew exactly what they wanted and didn't spend time choosing, and of course first application on bare nails. If they came back a second time there would be removal to build in which bearing in mind the product can't be genuine shellac, may take up to an hour to remove & replace.

It's a horrible feeling for the client to feel they're being rushed. Most hate it and don't return.

Poor you. Horrid situation.

Watch and wait for the complaints to roll in....
Stick to your higher standards, don't lower yourself to hers.

I suspect when this lady starts she won't actually be able to do what she claims!
Can you find out any info on where she's worked previously? When she arrives ask if she would like you to put her qualification certificates up on the wall next to everyone else's??

The thing is my boss isn't interested in the process, he's only interested in the end result and the money. I know what will happen now he was raving about her yesterday she can do this, she can do that she is an excellent nail tech. Then he turned it all on me you can't do this, you can't do that. He hasn't taken anything I've done into consideration and makes me feel bad

Do you know how your boss found her?
She might just be making it all up and isn't great at all.
I've seen plenty of staff who claim to be fantastic but then their clients are quickly back in with problems and complaints.

Just hold in tight there and stay perfectly professional. By Christmas you'll have her sussed

The cynic in me wonders if he fancies her.

Has he actually seen her do 3 shellacs an hour?.

I'd hang on long enough to find another room to rent. By then she might have proven to be less than satisfactory.

I'd be looking for something else btw. You might as well get a look at speedy Gonzalez and watch for "tips". Try and let it roll off you and just make your mind up you're leaving, then bide your time. Who knows, she might leave before you once the complaints come in! X
