I have searched and searched but can't find another thread (i'm sure i've read one) specifically on this subject.

My client has been using box dyes for years, has gradually become more itchy and last time was sneezing a lot as well. I adviced her to stop - told her of other bad reactions etc.
She is about 40 and has quite a lot of grey (60% through top area and sides). her natural colour is about a level 4 (which is colour she has been using ).

Is it likely that a pro colour would be less likely to cause a reaction or more likely? She is presently about to try herbatint (no ammonia, no parabens, from health food store) I insisted she did a skin test (in fact I mixed it up for her to make sure as I could see she may not have taken my advice).

Are there any professional colours that are less likely to cause a reaction? And can someone remind me of the main differences between pro colours and box otc ones - I have all my hairdressing science folders and text book but as it was ....ahem... quite a few years ago I know things have changed.

what can we offer that is more 'natural' it seems silly that clients have to go and buy dubious 'natural' colours from health stores and mess about doing it themselves because we have nothing similar to offer. I realise there are some exclusive salon only products but I can't get hold of these.

thanks:eek:

I don't think the chances of sensitivity would be less using pro products, but yes there's usually more ppd in box colours to make them work for even the most stupid of people. If the skin test goes ok you could offer to apply it for her maybe? Xoxo

box dyes have more ammonia and often higher vol peroxide. PPD allergy happens with both pro and box dyes. PPD is often in even organic colours.

Redken are about to launch a truly PPD colour range in the uk.

In that case I'm phoning them tomorrow!! ;)

I just contacted the company that were distributing philip martin's supposedly ppd free organic colour and they said they have stopped stocking because actually the colour did contain some ppd and wasn't all organic! This company ooharmony are currently commisioning their own colour from same company that makes philip martin stuff in Italy, which will be ppd free etc and just sold to professionals, they will send me some free samples when colour chart is in and all up and running.
I wish I could buy redken but as a lowly 'mobile' no such luxury for me!! are semi's less likely to cause allergy?
