Hi I am not a hairdresser but looking for some advice. I have naturally very dark brown hair with a hint of red in my natural hair colour. I have been putting dark hair dyes on it for a while just to keep a nice dark all over colour. But my q is I would quite like to go blonde but whenever I have tried in the past it ends up with a bit of a yellow tinge I think maybe cos of the red hue in my natural colour? Is there anyway I can achieve a nice blonde colour or shud I just not contemplate going blonde ? Any advice would be much appreciated? Thanks

I would advise a colour consultation with your hairdresser Hun, blue shampoo is good for getting rid of the brassy look once coloured, but as I have never seen your hair before I can't advise either way x

Your not a professional at all in any area of hair or beauty? This isn't yahoo questions so the most we will advise you on here is stop using the awful box colours that can be spotted a million miles away due to the poor quality and go to a hairdresser who knows what they are doing, the reason it's gone wrong is due to your lack of hair knowledge and the lack of information that box colours tell people, but I won't be telling youths background as its for us to know and use on clients
To keep the price as low as possible go to a college salon or training acadamey, as they are students you will get professional quality, an Yey are fully watched by ther tutors who are qualified hairdressers xpxo

Ok number one I am a trained in lashes, soon to train in beauty as a whole which is why I am on this site. Number two I only use box colourings myself at home as I only use a colour which is virtually the same as my natural colour and it looks natural otherwise I would not use it. And I have certainly never tried to dye my hair blonde myself! When I have had it done blonde in the past I did go to salons but I'm afraid to say even most trained hairdressers are perhaps not that good at their job. I have come away every time without the colour I actually asked for. I would not mind if they had told me from the start that it was not possible to achieve the colour rather than go ahead and do a crap job. Anyway perhaps I did not make clear in my original post the circumstances. I really only wanted a bit of advice really. Hope this clears up the misunderstanding. :)

Id Definitely stop with the box colours, my views still stand as above on them, but I would recommend going to a few salons in the area, a good stylist should do a no obligation consultation where they go through a colour guide to find your desired shade, (tell them you have used a colour previously and what colour &brand) they should then be able to tell you if your expectations are possible or way above what is possible, they should do a strand test (if you have time to stay look at the results) and apply a patch test.
If you haven't stayed then go back to see the results of te strand test.
Also go to atleast 3/4 salons that have a good reputation in the area.
The salon you decide to go with should recommend aftercare that will help keep warm tones at bay if you have chosen a flat or ash tone to te colour. Xoxo

You could always build your blonde desired color up with foil highlights. there are many great bleaches that lift upto 10 shades of lift. id recommend going to a salon and try take a picture with you of how you d liike your hair to look. and always to deep treatments what ever color you have in your hair good luck xx

Which ones lift 10 shades?

Thanks for advice. Will have to try find somewhere that is good at colouring and have a consultation I think. Its hard when you have had bad experiences with hairdressers in the past. xx

If you have friends whose hair you admire, or even if you see someone in Tesco's with great hair, ask who their stylist is, recommendations are key :) xx

It is always difficult to lift coloured hair without any warmth . For a long term plan to get a clean blonde it may be better to try and grow some of the colour out and have a good cut .
Id switch to semis and leave it as long as possible between recolouring and try to get the colour as close to your natural colour as possible , just blending the roots each time . I would get a hairdresser to do this for you They may be able to put a few slightly lighter pieces in at the same time .
Hopefully at some stage , there will be less build up and less dark dye in the hair which should make it easier and less traumatic to get a nice blonde on your hair , and also again , better to build the colour up than go staight from dark to bombshell on long hair especially if you dont want to end up having it cut off or dyed dark again because it looks dry .
