Hi everyone I hope someone can help me I am desperate for some advice im about to do a 4 day intensive full nail technician course in December I haven't paid for it yet or booked it, I can't really do anything other than an intensive course as I have booked that week of work and I work alot. Its around £450 for the course the company is called Next Step Nails and Beauty I dont want to spend that kind of money if it isn't going to worth it, are there any professionals that can give me some advice on what to do?

I'm sorry, I've not heard of that course, not sure if any other geeks have though?
I'm just concerned about doing a 4 day course. You can't possibly learn everything in that amount of time, sorry. I just think you'll end up having to pay for more courses afterwards to gain the knowledge that you will need.
Hth x

Hi TaraLash,
I have booked this course for the end of january and I was feeling a bit wary at first, but I know someone who has done this course and now owns their own nail salon. I think the access to the online manuals and videos are a good idea as you get a good head start to the course and everything is very detailed. It does seem to be a very intense course, but it seems to cover alot, and with alot of hard work and concentration, I think we'll be fine :)

ahh brillaint thats made me feel wayyy better Vicky and Kellsy I know there is a lot to learn thanks for being honest, I mean I've spoken to beauticians specifically one who said shes done 1 week courses to enable to do nails and has been fine with them I guess its loads of practice it is nerve racking handing over alot of money, Vicky are you buying the kit too?

I booked this course earlier this year. I never actually went on it though because they kept rescheduling my dates which made me lose faith in them!

I ended up doing the cnd complete course instead and it was the best decision I ever made! There is no way that you can learn everything in 4 days. On the cnd course it was 3 days just to learn the theory part! I personally would re think your course choice, it's so nice for me as a technician to know the ins and outs of the arm, leg, hand and foot and to be able to tell clients exactly what is in each product, what it does etc.

I would be a tiny bit wary of the reply above about the girl who did this course owning her own salon! They just joined today to answer this post, and the owner of NSB name is the same! Or maybe I'm just too untrusting ;-)

As long as you do not have silly expectations that this course is anything other than a beginning and that you will need to do much more before you are competent or confident to work on paying clients, and if it is the only time you can do it and you cannot wait until you can opt for something better then why not? But if you have a choice then you might want to look further.

For years I taught, first 4 day courses and then 5 day courses and they were a beginning for thousands of great technicians who are at the top of the industry today ... That is how they started, but it isn't how they finished as they, like the rest of us, went on and on and still go on learning and doing more training. No one was ever promised they would be able to march into a salon ready to be productive right after the training .... Courses that promise that kind of thing or instant riches are trying to hoodwink you and they are lying. Beware.

Totally agree, I was lured into doing an intensive course quite a while back and against all advice from this forum went ahead. I thought the course was great, the tutor was lovely and I was set to take the world by storm.......

then i woke up with a great big shock. Of course I thought everything was fantastic, I had nothing to compare it to, once in the real world I crashed and burned. I was forced to spend lots more on further training, better products and it took a long time for my confidence to return. To this day I hope that I would rather get a booking for a tan or facial or something other than nail extensions due to the lack of confidence. Silly I know because my nails are now fine and I dont get any problems but in the first few months I hated answering the phone.

As Geeg says, don't expect to be fully qualified and ready to do just about anything. Think of it as a beginners workshop with the bonus of a certificate from an accredited trainer, once you have completed take time to practice and keep on adding to your qualifications.

In hindsight I would have rather taken the longer route. It would have wasted much less time and saved me a load of aggravation and worry. But then that is me, hopefully you will gain a lot from the course and after all we all have to start somewhere.

Good luck and I hope you do enjoy your course and that you do well.

Hi again taralash,
I have bought the kit. It's excellent equipment and excellent quality. Fast delivery too!!! Well worth it.xxx

Please please don't pay any money my cousin paid and they have changed her date 3 times now and because she had opened the studying part online they won't give her money back we also emailed the hotel to see if there was a booking under the name and the hotel have never heard of this!!!!!!!!
We are now looking at other courses so if any of you geeks can help me here would be very much appreciated

Yeah I have just joined today. And I saw this thread and thought I'd have a look to see what other people's opinions are as I only know one other person who has done courses with them. The girl I know did do this course and does own her own salon. I'm not disputing the fact that there is other work to do and that someone is not always going to jump straight into a job. And no, I didn't just join this site to answer that post. There's just no need to be so rude by accusing me of joining just to give someone a false sense of security. I thought this was going to be a friendly site, but I must have been mistaken!!! My name is Vicky Tilsley actually. Are you now going to tell me that's the name of the owner of next step beauty?!
You seem to know oh so much more about myself than I do!!!

oh ok! I really don't know what to do now Vicky it did give me faith, I did jut want to get the ball rolling soon...I know I need to do alot more than just the course and I know about the rescheduling I rang and checked before I paid and checked to see if I had paid would I get a refund as I was originally going to do the course next week! Are there any other courses anyone can recommend the nvq at my local college doesn't start till next september now! xx

Have you researched NSI courses or CND courses? I spent a very long time researching my options and these two providers came out top for me in terms of product, educators, assessibility, frequency etc....and both are highly recommended by fellow geek's.....

Thankyou I will have a look into those for sure :) :lick

ps there seems to be a number of options for these 2 are there any particular ones?!

It depends where you want to start? If you have the money then the CND Complete Course is highly praised here. I couldn't work the dates (14 fixed dates) but that would have been my first choice if I didn't work full time.

CND and NSI have a similar programme of courses and I am starting with the NSI Foundation Course in Gel - a 4/5 day programme (mine is 4 days as I'm doing it one-to-one). Then I intend to add L&P and Shellac in the coming months :p
