hi everyone just hoping for a bit of advice have read through loads of threads but can't find an answer! I am a newly qualified nail tech and seem to have given myself an allergy.

It is only on my right thumb at the knuckle no where near eponychium etc. and after watching what I have been doing on clients I have realised its from my knuckle touching the neck of gel polish bottle when painting as I hold bottle in my left hand. Has anyone ever had anything like this? I'm glad to say it appears to only be overexposure to uncured product as I currently have the gel polish on my nails and no other reactions have happened. Will this allergy get worse and mean I won't be able to wear gel polish or is it just with the uncured product? Have invested so much time and money into this I don't want to have to give up

Thanks

I'm not a great help but too am suddenly experiencing a reaction from doing gel polish nails. Mine is a nausea and headache reaction rather than on the skin though. Like you I have invested so much over the years I want to find a way to not have to give up nails.xx

It's usually the uncured product but the more you expose your skin to it the more reaction you can get... Maybe wear a glove on that hand... And take a break from doing gel on yourself for a bit.... :(

If you don't want to wear gloves then finger cots are a great alternative. They are like a finger of a glove so you could just put one of them on your thumb.
They are quite inexpensive too.
Just do a search in eBay and I'm sure you will find them. HTH

I hold my normal lacquer bottles like this when painting, but for gel polish I keep the bottle on the table for the same reason. :)

Hi,
This is an exert from a material safety data sheet from a leading nail product manufacturer, freely available to read or download on their website, along with data sheets for all their products. They make interesting, yet shocking reading. The basic fact is that prolonged use of any of these products without proper extraction, ventilation and handling will damage your health. Some more than others.
Check out the new Ravair Nail Dust and Fume Extractor on our Ambermist website or our facebook page to see it in action. The filter contains real activated carbon pellets that will remove these fumes and is a very inexpensive way too protect your health.

Thank you very much for your replies! I definitely need to think of something im just not sure i could work with gloves! its definitely the uncured product thats doing it as i have my toes and fingers done in the same gel polish and nothing and because of where it is on my thumb im pretty certain its the uncured. i think putting the bottle down may be the answer! im so scared i knock it over though dont want to seem like a clumsy lol!have seen finger cots have you used them yourself? they look so rude:p thanks again for your help really appreciate it!

oh i also wondered if you could use the tech tape? and just put a bit on i thought about a plasterbut think that wouldnt look very nice!!

I don't hold the bottle either I put it off to the side I've only tipped it once and grabbed it right away so no love lost
