I,ve been putting it off for months, but folloing my 121 with Geeg i fnally picked up the courage to call a hair salon near to me to rent a table. I am meeting her at 5:30 tonight to talk about it. I have read past threads on costs and such and have decided to offer her 25% of my takings for treaments. and any retail profits are mine. It is a busy salon and she is really nice and easy going. I will be the only nail technician there so should hopefully do OK.

Is there anything that i should be aware of before i go?
Does 25% sound about right...i charge £30 for a full set of P&W...she would get £7.50 for every full set i do.
I would expect someone to take appointments when i'm not there also.

Can anyone think of anything else?

Well I have never done it so this is only my opinion, but I would start out with a bartering figure of 20%. Who knows she may accept that and in which case you have gained another 5%. Or she may want to up it a bit, in which case 25% is only where you intended to be in the first place. She will feel she has done a good bit of bartering and you will not actually have lost out.

Go on give it a try. I always barter is I possibly can and most times it pays off. Please let us know how you get on.

Good luck

i'm still waiting for a reply about the salon at the end of my road, i asked loads of things in the letter i sent such as..
will I be able to trade under my own name?
will I have full control of prices
am i able to advertise my services via A board/leaflets/press etc
can I display my certificates
is it acceptable to do airbrushing on the premises

They told me that they would take bookings for me, im not sure if i like that? they dont know how long i take! lol also, i am sharing a table as they offer manicure - not sure if i like that either...

hope it goes well for you xx

p.s your gel nails were beautiful!

I like Val's plan of starting at 20% and leaving room for negotiation :D

Find out things like who is responsible for:-

Tea & coffee
Advertising
Cleaning the salon
Product ordering
Booking appointments
Your appointment book
Insurance

Make sure you get everything in writing beforehand so there are no misunderstandings later

Go for it and Good Luck

I agree with the bartering, you should aim low and have something to work towards.
I assume you will be supplying all your own products but if not you will need to know who will be doing the ordering.
I would want to take all my own bookings as you know how long you take and if you`re out of the salon you still know where you are with it all.
Also have a contract......too often things go wrong for the silliest of reasons so you need to be covered.
And are you covered with their insurance or do you have to have your own? Good luck with it all!

as i am mobile at the minute adn continue to do so, i do have my own insurance, i imagine this will also cover me if i work their also. It will be my own products etc, and i will be ordering. the only thing i require really is a space for a table and probably a retail stand.
I know what you mean about making appointments, maybe i should leave my own number.

I think i will start at 20% and see what happens.

thanks Aspirations for yur kind comment but they weren't really. They were all over the place!!!....lol

You're so brave! I'm currently mobile and would love to rent a chair at some point, everyone seems to be full of good advise so I'm sure you'll be fine!

Good luck, I hope you stike a bargain deal!

Well? how did it go? x

She was really keen, as for sorting out a price we were both as useless as each other...lol. we know each other so we don't want to feel we a ripping each other off!!

We chatted for ages, i didn't leave her salon til 7:30! My chicken inthe oven was frazzled...lol

she is going to get back to me, she mentioned paying £10 per day.

I will let you all know how it goes

£ 10 a day isn't bad ! i got offered £30 a day !!!!

but if she is doing it that way ask if you still have to pay if you are not there !

i still had to ...

I really only want to do 2 days as i still have my mobile clients. I'm sure she ment the days i was there.....Mmmm not sure

Just an update. she called me last night to tell me everthing is Ok on her side if i still want to move in. We agreed 25% to start and see how i get on. Then once i am established i would like to pay her a set amount each week. She has mentioned it to her clients who normally go to another salon for their nails and thinkit is a good idea. so hopefully i should do OK.

any money i make is going towardds my master traing so hoipefully it wont be too long.

I'm off to Ikea at Newcastle next week to have a look at the two table i've shown. Plu sin timei woul dlike to stock some retail.

Can't wait till the Gmex show in Manchester...i thinki am gonna need a second mortgage...lol

Well done Debbie :) When do you start? I hope everything goes well for you. Looking forward to gmex ... we will have to arrange somewhere that we can all meet and say hi to each other :)

Good point....I pay my rent even if I'm not there, same way I pay my morgage and my nursery fees if I'm away too....how does this work if you're on a %?

Hi

Good luck with this it sounds ideal, its great that you are already on friendly terms and know she is a good person!

Keep us all updated wont you. Talking of ikea they have some fab glass fronted display units that aren't too big that would be ideal to pop on the wall behind your desk.

If your planning on leaving any of your working stock there can i suggest a locking cabinet as although the boss may be nice sometimes staff like to ehhh help themselfs to your stuff! Cheeky blighter's.

Hi everyone,

I pay 40% which I know is high and I have to pay a percentage towards the advertising and share the table and she will not let me do manicures or if she does then I have to give her 60% of them coz im using her stuff.
I work there two days a week the other four days I work in another salon and I pay rent which Im a lot happier doing but at the other place im earning hardly anything. So 25% is bril.

good luck

Hi Mamma

I recently started renting a table in a tanning salon and I pay 25%,

just a suggestion but I offered a 10% discount on all treatments booked and taken in the first month I was there and it really helped pull in the clients
cause once youve given them a beautifull set of nails they will deffo be back for maintenance every 2-3 weeks!!!

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Nikki.xx
