Hi

I did a back wax the other day and in some areas the skin peeled almost like when you have sunburn and the skin flakes off a few days later. This has never, ever happened to me when waxing in any area. The peeling effect disappeared when after wax was applied.

I checked the temperature of the wax on myself immediately before use, it was not too hot. I also pulled the skin taught correctly and prepped the area using pre wax and removed any excess moisture.

This has never happened to the client before only redness.

Anyone have any ideas as to why this may have happened?

Thanks

I have had this happen to one particular client before on her legs. She had extremely dry skin and I put it down to this. I advised her to exfoliate regularly especially a few days before her wax and it has gotten better and doesn't seem to happen as much now. X

Hi Afroditeg,

There could be several reasons why the clients skin peeled during the waxing and as you had checked the temperature used pre waxing oils then that was perhaps not the reason then it could be another reasons ; if the client has dry or fragile skin, sunburnt skin or perhaps they are on certain medications (Roaccutane,or some of the acne treatments like Deffrin or Retin-A and steriod creams) that can cause the skin to become very dry and fragile. I include these on my client consultation forms so the client can indicate if they have had these medications within the last three months.

Can I hijack this post for a minute.

Jack, if your clients were on this medication I right to say its a contraindication? This is what my last manager told me. If its a cream would it only be contraindicated on the body part it is applied?

And how long after someone was finished with this treatment is it ok to wax?

Hi Lolly22,

I only treat clients who have finished the medication and there has been a gap of three months. I will not treat the area that the skin is currently being treated with the cream.

Hi Lolly. Being on medication is not a contraindication in itself. Only certain meds as MaleWaxer has listed.

However, I find that some regular meds such as anti-biotics etc can result in different reactions when waxing.

Going back to the original question. That can happen when a wax is allowed to go too cold and that can remove skin, leaving a patchy, shiny finish. HTH's.

Will speak to you soon as I am waiting on you to confirm dates for Edinburgh at the end of Jan and get booked on. Hope you haven't forgotten me.
