Bad experience with hair extensions!

I'm after a bit of advice - I've just had a full head of micro ring extensions. The woman came round a few weeks ago for a hair consultation where she colour matched me and decided I'd need 100 bonds. Anyway today the lady told me because my hair was so thick and blunt I'd need more so ended up having 150 and they look absolutely awful. She's used black micro ring even though I've got bright blonde hair and you can clearly see where my natural hair ends and the extensions start.

She's suggesting to cut into my hair and then reapply the hair which she hasn't got space for two weeks however I'm literally embarrassed to even leave the house atm. I've asked her to take them out to which she replied she would and give me a third of my money back until I have them put back in once I've had my hair cut less blunt. I'm really not happy with this as I have to take my daughter to her house to have them taken out and don't want her touching my hair again tbh. Can I ask for a full refund? Would it be advisable to have a friend remove them instead and return the hair to her?

Im a nail technician and on the very few occasions I've had complaints I've resolved them there and then and the costs involved have been considerably lower so unsure how to go about this... Help??

Hi, unfortunately the extensionist doesn't sound very professional or experienced. Using black Micro Rings in blonde hair is totally wrong, they should be colour matched to the nearest colour of the roots of your hair, no wonder you are feeling upset and conscious of them being seen. Also if you have a blunt cut the ends should be 'chipped into or razored' to get rid of the bluntness which will stick out like a sore thumb! as the ends will poke through the extensions instead of blending in. This is something that should have been done before starting to apply the extensions. Don't get anyone else to remove or touch your hair as this will unfortunately void getting a refund as the responsibility will rest with the last person who touches your hair and not the lady who installed your hair extensions.
I would call her again, explain that you are not happy with the service that she has given mentioning all the negatives and ask for the extensions to be removed asap or you will take legal action. Record your conversation (apps available search call recorders) as evidence so that the extensionist can't deny anything that she says to you. Extreme measures, I know but necessary imo as this gives professional extensionists a bad name. Good luck going forward, hope that you can resolve this amicably and that you get a refund.

Buyer Beware!

Unless she has caused you physical harm, (burnt scalp, bald patches etc.) you don't have much in the way of legal protection, so it's up to you to negotiate a deal that you're happy with. You can ask for a full refund but if she refuses, you've not got much of a case. You can try suing in the small claims court for a full refund but you'd have to prove that she was in breach of contract. Just being unhappy with the quality of the hair or the finished look isn't likely to be a good enough reason, to be honest, unless you can prove that you were seriously misled.

...Don't get anyone else to remove or touch your hair as this will unfortunately void getting a refund as the responsibility will rest with the last person who touches your hair and not the lady who installed your hair extensions.

That's not strictly true!
Assuming the fitting was obviously badly done (poor sectioning, too tight bonds etc.), it could be deemed reasonable for the client to choose to visit a professional hairdresser with significant experience in hair extensions, to have the hair removed.
If the client took plenty of before and after pictures and the hairdresser supplied a letter stating how (in her professional opinion) the fitting was not up to a reasonable standard expected of a qualified hairdresser, this could be used as evidence.
However, in all cases, it's up to the District Judge to view all the evidence and come to a decision. A highly regarded professional would charge £700 plus for a full head of hair extensions so if your extensionist was fairly cheap by comparison, it could be argued that you got what you paid for.
You can't expect Mercedes quality for the price of a Fiat 500.

It seems that everybody and their nan does a one day hair extension course and then runs offers on Facebook these days. It's up to the client to search out the competent extension technicians, of which there are many, but it's a minefield for the unwary.

Hi Haircutz, thanks for the above information, I didn't realise that this was an option, I have obviously been misinformed previously. I am glad you put me right so that I don't misinformed others. I agree wholeheartedly with your last paragraph.

I'm not a qualified hairdresser and I've been specialising in hair extensions for nearly 20 years, very successfully I might add! It's important that she is an expert in her field and her after care service is distinctly lacking it seems! I actually use dark brown rings ( not black though) for many of my blond clients so that in itself is not unusual as it can match the root colour and be much more discreet than a blond ring. However the issue appears to be the consultation. She knew then that u had thick blunt hair so should have made u aware of the process needed to give u flawless extensions i.e. U will need many more to create layers and perhaps some thinning of the ends prior to install. Then of course u can make a decision to go ahead or not. I would make that app for 2 weeks time, ( she may hope the wait will put u off so she may bring it forward if she knows she isn't getting out of it! ) and allow her to correct the problem. Still not happy? Ask for a refund and go from there. Good luck!

There are some excellent hair extension technicians around and equally, some very poor hairdressers!
Just a casual glance through the 'Ask a Pro' threads will confirm this.

Unfortunately, the ease of copy and paste means that some so called hair professionals are using other people's work to advertise their services online and it is very difficult to make an informed choice when based on clear misdirection. Word of mouth is still a reliable form of advertising.
