Hi, I m a mobile nail tech . I love doing nails and wouldnt change that. I am mobile at the moment because it suits my home curcumstances. I have two young sons that have just started school and need me to be there from 3pm onwards.( I am also a nurse two nights a week.) Anyway the whole point of this post was to find out if other mobile techs feel very "on their own". I would love to have a mentor or the support of a salon to help and guild me. I can have the companies I trained with on the end of the phone if I need, but I miss any hands on help. Do other people feel this or is it just me and how do you overcome this. My confidence is not the greatest anyway. Any help and advice will be appriciated.
Thankks, Onyx

First of all hi and welcome.

I'm mobile and home-based and have been for the last couple of years. I'm not originally from Suffolk and some of my training was completed back in Kent. I have recently attended a conversion course in Norwich (with a well known company  ) and wouldn't even bother to contact them for future help, so in answer to your question, yes I'm also "on my own".

This site has been fantastic. Most of my questions have been answered by the search facility, or I've posted and someone usually can help.

Part of me would love to work in a salon..... but then I love the fact I'm my own boss and I don't have to be at work for 9.oo am

It's nice to see another Suffolk geek on here.

Good Morning Everyone.

Im Also A Loner Working From Home, I Work Every Morning At Vauxhall, Then The Evenings And Weekends I Do My Clients, Which Works For Me As I Have A Very Active And Clingy 3 Year Old, But To A Point I Would Like To Work In A Salon But Then Again I Like Too Being My Own Boss And I Can Work As And When I Want, And Also If There Is Anybody That I Didnt Want To Do I Would Say That Im Tied Up , The Lady Who Trained Me Through Star Nails Has Become A Friend And When I Need Help And Advise She Is Always There, And She Has Years Of Experience In Training Etc, So I Know Whats Its Like To Be A Billy No Mates But I Think You Have The Best Of Both Worlds Cos Working In A Salon Generally Where I Live Either Charge A Fortune To Rent A Space Or Pay Rubbish Wages Where As At Home You Charge Your Price, And Use Your Own Stuff Not Much On The Over Heads And No One To Answer To!! So Dont Be Down About It Look On The Positive Side To Things If You Have A Good Rapour With Your Clients Thats All You Need . Oh Forgot And This Brilliant Site....

Hello
Im currently working full time as a prison officer and doing nails mobile when I have time. I find this web site a great source of help and everyone is so friendly and full of advice to help me on my way. Eventually I would like to work full time as a nail tech but have been worried about the lonely side of the life as a mobile tech so I havejoined Cuticles who are fantastic...only have to pick up the phone for help and advice. There are also other Cutilces techs that I can meet up with and talk to.
Confidence comes in time just remember to be yourself
Good luck

Hi. I'm a mobile tech working in Crewe, so quite a long way from you but yes, I can see where you're coming from there.

My clients are (mostly!) lovely but it can be a bit lonely cos you don't have work colleagues like you would have in most other jobs. Like you I have small children, well a demanding almost 3 year old and a baby that is refusing to come out so I'm now 5 days overdue! I used to be a Front of House Manager at the theatre here in Crewe which was an extremely sociable job. Not only did I work with some great people but socialised with them and made some great friends too. This is what I miss about being a mobile tech.
But!!! Look on the positive side, you're your own boss, not having to work to strict hours and charging your own prices, not having to take a crap wage from someone or handing over half your takings to a landlord etc.
Try and get in touch with other techs in your area for a bit of moral support and the odd glass of chardonnay!!!

Good luck!

Hi Onyx!

Well you've come to the right place for a start! You'll get loads of advice and support here from everyone and I'm sure there will be plenty of other members here close to your location so hopefully you go could along to some "geek meets" that quite a lot of the guys here arrange within their own areas.

Yes, you can feel isolated sometimes as a mobile technician, but you always have this site where you can come any time of the day (literally!) to get advice, let off steam or even have a mad half hour if the mood takes you (I know I do  ) !

i've just started mobile and its so much better as i am being ripped off good and proper working in a salon, i'm paid a set wage of £38.00 or £30.00 any day after 2 days and i work 8 hours every weekend for that!!! even though at christmas i averaged 7 sets a day no christmas bonus zip extra. so that it from me they just want to fleece you of all your money even though you work damn hard for it.
you can get fantastic advice and tips off here so you'll never feel alone here its ace!!

hi there

I am mobile and I just love it. Although it can get you down being on your own, it is very isolating. But if I feel like this I often think back to my bitchy desk job that I hated to extremity but stayed put for 5 years.

I think it is worse when you get a few calls and bookings, you feel all your efforts aren't worth it. Then you'll have a day where the phone doesn't stop ringing.

I find talking to clients and getting ideas from them, family, friends and of course my husband is enough to keep me going.

My brain is like a hamster on a wheel constantly trying to get new ideas to keep the business ticking over.
And I only work part time. Can't imagine how hard it is trying to get a full time business up and running.

Anyway you are not alone, we all feel this way but just keep emailing on here. It has done wonders for me and keeps me inspired.

LOL

Yes, being mobile can be a lonely old job.

Although it would be lovely to have the support of a salon, let's face it, it's unlikely that that's gonna happen as you're in competition with them. They may worry that you'll poach their clients.

So, how about you put an ad on here asking other mobile geeks to mentor and support each other. Try to get one that is not too far away from where you live but not too close so there are no issues around nicking each others patch.

You might not get much response because we can all be on our guard about other peoples motives. However, I tossed that idea out the window many years ago. You get back what you put into life. So, when you find a mentor, make sure that you give as well as take.

Good luck sweetie. xx

Hi Peeps,

I'm mobile and have been full time since May this year, I absolutely love what I do. I don't find it lonely at all, I have a really good working relationship with my clients and feel I visit my friends and catch up on gossip all day yet I still remain professional at every treatment. It does take alot of self motivation and determination to keep it up. When I don't have clients I am thinking and experimenting on how to get more so I am really too busy to be lonely.

I still work 3 evenings a week at a salon and feel somewhat trapped as I enjoy being my own boss. I will be leaving soon anyway it's just a matter of time now.

xxxx
