Any Wella users that bump the base? Interested in what you use and how you do it.

explain, never heard this term. . .

For example let's say you were a natural level 5 and I did a highlight one color being highlift ash ash with 40 vol and another very fine one of 40 vol lightener it would be pretty but your natural is a little too dark for that so I mix a level 7 ash in Demi permanent and put it on your roots for about 8-10 min. It would soften your base color so everything blends a little better.

Yes I do this in the goldwell range had a base of 5 and did a 8ash this would leave an 8 golden brown then the second colour is a hilight to a 11 then soften with pearly to blend out cold tones. Blooming marvellous!

i think this is reffered to in america as breaking the base ? i read about it on a hair forum and was totally confused , lol x

as i am not a color specialist by any means .. why do the level 7 on a level 5 base when it cant lighten ? is there a special reason ?
am sorry if this appears to be a daft question , but i am rusty with hairdressing having been out of it for a good few yrs , lol x

Think he's talking about flooding the foils to lift the base a shade or two. Thats my interpretation anyway!!

dawn do you think a level 7 demi on a base 5 would do much ? , i wouldnt even think of tryin this so its interesting

Yes I do, and I have it done 2 mine. I'm a level 4 and use a 7/1 with 0/81 mixtone but use 9%
A 7 demi surely wouldn't do much?
I foil 1st, the apply base colour x

Yes, it would make it a golden 6.

You would do it to create less contrast between the highlights and the base, gives a more diffuse look to the highlights.

You can also smudge bleach highlights using a similar method. Foil highlight as normal, using bleach. remove and shampoo. towel dry well.
Use a golden 8, in majirel it is 8.33 with 10 vol. apply quickly to the whole head. process at the basin for 15 mins.

gives lovely beachy blonde lights on a golden light brunette base, gorgeous!

right thats good to know thanks hun x

The goal here is to not really see a different color at the base just kinda soften it ever so slightly so things blend and little better.
Semi permanent if mixed with a developer 1.9% should just add a little tone. 3% and above will technically lift a little and thus expose underlying pigment which is why I prefere to use ash tones. Besides here in Hawaii there is so much sun and salt water that color fades very quickly. Good to hear all the comments :)

thanks for the input its good to know little tricks and tips , esp as i am not hugely confident in color , lol x

If I wanted to use a slightly lighter shade than golden would I still use a 10vol with the same processing time? Gonna try smudge bleach tomorrow. Think question I know!
