Can tanning really do this?

Hi there, I am new to the mobile tanning industry - but after reading reviews on different solutions I came across Suntana - the only one that had all positive.

I went out on Friday evening to do a spray tan on a girl, using the Cherry Solution. I was in the house at least 10 minutes after I had finished and she seemed fine. I left her then went onto the party I had booked in. I was there less than 20 minutes when I received a text off the girls friend claiming she was acting strange.

The symptoms she was claiming was:

  • Withering in pain, so much she couldn't shower to remove the solution
  • Felt like her hair was falling out, but it actually wasn't
  • Delusions
  • Blotchy skin
  • Cold sweats

She refused a 24 hour skin test, so I got her to sign forms to say I am in no way responsible for any affects that may happen. I then searched the net again, and couldn't find anything at all to say this has happened with any kind of solutions in the past.

It has really shook me, and knocked my confidence a little. Do you think she was trying to pull a fast one to get a free tan? Or can this really happen?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you, Lesley x

Can I ask what advice you gave her?
Did you tell her to phone NHS 24 if this was indeed the case and her symptoms where real?
I have heard of skin going blotchy if a client has a reaction or if exema ect is apparent but have not heard of any of the other symptoms from a tan- but if its true sounds like a severe allergic reaction and she really needed to get medical advice.

As for getting her to sign re not having a patch test there really is no point in this as it wont stand up- you need to follow your insurers guidelines for patch testing and if they require you to patch test everyone then so be it im afraid.

Have you heard from the client again?

Whoa, never ever heard of anything like this before.

If this was really happening she might have called you first but the second call would have been to the A&E at hospital - in person!!

Sounds like some serious symptoms and as a client you wouldn't ignore them you would seek medical assistance immediately.

Call Suntana on Monday and talk it through with them to see if any of those symptoms are likely.

I think it was probably a genuine reaction, to say all that was happening just to get a free tan is highly unlikely-also because if you reacted like that you wouldnt want another free or not.
It sounds like a severe reaction to DHA-the active ingredient in tanning solutions, so dont panic, you havent done anything wrong.

It could be a reaction to any of the ingredients in the solution. I have never heard of anyone having a reaction like this although of course it is possible.

As someone else mentioned, I would have recommended that she go straight to the nearest emergency department is these symptoms were genuine.

as a nurse, I can say that does sound truly like an allergic reaction. She should have gone to A&E perhaps after taking a dose of piriton.

Don't let it knock your confidence - just learn from it. Patch tests are suggested for a reason. You must never tan this woman again even if she is after a freebie.
