Really want to give water marbling a try this weekend, I just wondered if you could do it with acrylic paint as well as varnish?
I wasn't sure if you had to use something that would sit on top of the surface of the water, but thought I had seen someone mention that they'd marbelled with paint.
Just found a stash of lovely paint colours in my local craft store so wondered if they would work.

Hi hun,
You guessed right. Acrylic craft paints are water-based themselves and wont work.
You need something that is repelled by the water and sits on top.
Maybe there are some paints that would work I dont know but, polish works perfect! :wink2:
Hth.

This was a post I have quoted of Layla's .. lots of marbelling threads in the search facility :)

Paint your nails white. Get a cup of cold water. Its prob best to cover your work surface with old paper of something, its messy!!

Drip a drop of nail varnish into the water, I always use white first because it makes the other colours stand out better and lessens the chance of them merging together.

As soon as you have dripped in the forst drop, drop in another colour. Allow the varnish to spread out. take a cocktail stick and gently swirl the colours.

Dip your finger tip into the water so the varnish has covered it. Keep it in the water, and move all the unused varnish on the top out of the way with the cocktail stick, and slide your finger out.

Drag all the old varnish off the surface and wipe it in a tissue or something. Then do the process again on the other nails

Have a go... its easy and lots of fun :)

I hope you dont mind me jumping in here but, dont go for 'cold' water.
The water needs to be room temp. or the varnish will 'skin' straight away on hitting the cold water.
This is a really great link someone posted a while back... http://www.oceasia.com.au/nail/focusmarble.html

Also below is my first ever water-marbling client. A 13yr old daughter of a mani client of mine. Colours are a little too subtle to really get the full effect but its what she wanted ...who said kids arent too demanding!

i dont do much nail art, just the basic flicks and dots....ha ha.

call me stupid, but do their fingers get nail varnish all over them. do you just wipe off the excess with a pad and remover? and what do you use to tidy up the side walls/cuticle area.

your nails are lovely, i want to try them myself.

Take a cocktail stick and swirl it into a cotton wool pad...like candyfloss on a stick!! Dip it into nail polish remover and swipe the polish off the skin. And because you're using a small stick, you can get the cuticles and sidewalls nice and clean easily.

:)

ohhhhh im going to have to have a go, you geeks are great.
