OMG I was charging £20 while I was learning!! How cheeky eh? but I always made sure they were happy with there nails and they came back so I think you should always charge and dont go below £10.

I think this is your time to bite the bullet and get tough hun!!

These are exactly the sort of people I mean. This friend will probably let you do her nails for free till the day you retire if you let her. Next time she wants to book an appointment with you, tell her that now you're fully qualified and trying to make a living out of this you need to charge her your going rate. You can still do it in a nice way (maybe thank her for all her help in letting your practice on her while you were training, and you hope she'll understand that this is your living now etc).

Be prepared to lose her as a client! But, if you do, dont worry over it. Clients who dont pay are not good clients, and you need to learn that some people will only want nails if you're not making any money out of it! I had four "victims" when I was training. When I put my prices up to £10 because I was getting a bit better but still training, that went down to two, and when I qualified and started charging the full rate, it went down to one. that lady is still a loyal client now, but the other three dont get their nails done at all, they just had them because they were free/cheap.

Yer i know hun ive told her thats it now if she wants them done anymore she will have to pay the going rate!! Think she was slightly shocked LOL

Just to clarify a few things for you from the Guild's point of view. We can offer student membership insurance cover, which stipulates that students require the direct supervision of a Full Guild member when carrying out treatments on any member of the public. Students are covered to carry out case studies outside of college for the following treatments only:

  • Aromatherapy
  • Baby Massage (the Therapist MUST teach the parents/guardians how to carry out this treatment on their baby using a doll)
  • Reflexology
  • Indian Head Massage
  • Body Massage
  • Manual Facials
  • Make-up
  • Manicure and Pedicure (excluding the cutting of cuticles.)
Students can charge for case study treatments if they wish. A client can still claim even if the treatment was given to them free of charge. What you want to charge is entirely up to you. Look at your work, and the cost of your materials, and work out what you can justify.

Also, we do recognise qualifications from Essential Nails for insurance purposes.
