Chemical hair straightening

Hi everyone hopefully someone can give me a bit of information on chemical hair straightening. If i dont straighten my hair it goes into a sort of wavy frizz ball and its awful! i would love to be able to wash it and leave it but would i get this result by chemical straightening? And will it damage my hair? thanks xx
