We have just started learning about colour at college. I've asked the question but I'm not getting the answer and I'm getting frustrated.

Before applying a colour to your clients hair, you have to know the natural base colour. If they have a dye on their hair already with no regrowth, how do you determine their natural colour do you ask them and go with that or do you take the colour that's on their hair and go with that?

Is there a golden rule?:D

You can normally see some regrowth it you look very closely at the roots, unless they have just had it done. If they have done it themselves chances are they will not have got to to roots at the back of the head. Another thing to look st is eyebrows but they can be coloured too.

If u have a client with coloured hair and no regrowth they must be wanting a colour correction, so then work with their skin tone, eye colour and eyebrow colour,

Remember that tint can't lighten tint so, as discohair said, it's probably a colour correction...or going darker.

Work with what's on the hair - take into account the tones and what their target colour is. You might need to neutralise a tone to get the target (if they have a lot of red you'd need to use a tint with green tones to get a flat shade etc). Match the colour to the shade chart so you have an idea of base and tone.

Consultation, consultation, consultation.
