Hi geeks, i went to do a skin test on someone today ,and they asked me to bring some purple hair colour with me when I go to colour her hair on Friday! Her daughter is 6 and sometimes has a couple of purple streaks in the front of her hair which she wants me to redo as it's faded out! I said no as I feel she is too young, and would have to check with insurance! She would still need to have a skin test too anyway( she was at school)
What would you have said ? Would you do it as It's only a couple of packets ? I have some purple crazy colour , could I maybe use that instead ?

Personally I don't agree with colouring children's hair, but it's not up to me to make that decision for the parent.
I suppose if the parent Is happy and the insurance covers it and you're getting paid for it, then it's your call.
Years ago I was asked to bleach out a temp fashion colour that had stained a 6 year olds hair, her natural colour was White blonde. The mum thought that whatever was put on would wash out, as it said it would on the tin but 2 weeks later the little girl still had a strange orange glow in places. I remember the salon managers having very long discussions about whether it was ethical or not, but the mum ended up saying, look, I'm responsible for her, I'm paying you to do it so just do it! My manager told me to do it so I did!
Another client used to permanently colour her 2 girls hair blonde from the age of 4 as she swore that kept the nits away. Something strange about seeing a 4 year old with roots :\

I'd never do it as there follicle is far too delicate and also my insurance company won't cover me for colouring kids hair. It's a well known fact that certain chemicals were removed from hair dyes as there was a rise in bladder cancer, however children were not part of these statistics and therefore children are at risk of developing certain cancers if using hair dyes. But of all reasons why would any parent in there right mind want to dye there kids hair? Deranged comes to mind! Next we'll be seeing this in our mags no doubt.....

how did you get a picture of my child lol

iv been asked a lot of times to do kids and the ages just seems to be going down my age now is 13-14 depending on their hair and if its a couple of highlights any younger i just say a plain NO i find it very weird how no matter how much you explain the risks to the parent they still dont seem fazed and just say ahhh but her wee pals got it so she wants it.

I posted this on another thread recently -

I have just seen a 'Stop Press' article in Goldwell/KMS Update Magazine Winter 2011 - it reads as follows;

'EU Directive Colour for Under 16's

You may notice that on Goldwell Color products there is a new guideline appearing that states: "THIS PRODUCT IS NOT INTENDED FOR USE ON PERSONS UNDER THE AGE OF 16".
This recommendation comes from the EU Commission and must be stated on all oxidative and non-oxidative coloration products by November 2011.'

This is not on my present cans of Goldwell Topchic but I guess will be soon.

I think it brings up lots of issues, such as -
Insurance will not cover you even if you and parent are prepared to colour an under 16's hair.
Do we need to ID anyone who looks under 16?
Will box colours sold in shops have this on them too? If not it seems very unfair.
If an under 16 colours their hair somehow and it is a disaster, who will fix it if a salon is not allowed to?
Also we all know some hairdressing businesses will not follow this recommendation.
We do not have a big demand for colouring under 16's hair but I would not colour hair of anyone under 14 and then only with parent permission and by that I mean parent coming in with them and being fully involved in consultation process.

Hi, personally i would never perform any chemical service on a child of 6, i think its just asking for trouble!!!:eek:x

I'm glad of all your replies , I completely agree. I didn't like the idea of colouring a 6 year olds hair no matter how small,But wanted a bit of reassurance ! I will just tell her a firm no and hope she see's sense. Thanks geeks !!!

Yes explain the long term risks that can happen as a result of colouring a child's hair.
