Hmm, how about combining the best of both worlds? A standalone application that synchronises in real time with a SAAS system. If the internet goes down, then you won't need to worry, as the data is also on your PC. And if your hard drive gives up the ghost, then you can just take a copy of your entire database from the SAAS system. That would be rather cool, I think!

:)

You've just described Salon Swift Ruth!

It's a standalone app that has intricate ties with the internet (if you have internet though it doesn't NEED it). All backups are done locally on the hard drive and a USB stick and also remotely on the internet. (3 levels of protection)

It does real time sync with our online system if you desire (good for multi salons and back office setups where the head office needs to see real time figures).

If the internet goes down you still have your data on the salon computer and when it comes back up again it syncs with the internet straight away to bring it all back in line with each other.

If you have multiple machines in the one salon there is no "central server" so if one crashes the other just continues and when you reload the crashed computer it re-syncs any data is missed out on whilst it was down.

We host all data in the Google cloud, so in terms of data security I think we're pretty safe ;).

It's nice to see people talking about this kind of thing. I'm quite impressed! I believe we're the only product that does all this. We deliberately chose this real time sync of data between the cloud and the salon machine because the world is not QUITE ready for all the time on internet. It's so close, but not quite there. Salon Swift is ready to transition at the drop of a hat technically but we can support both systems perfectly. It's a beautifully programmed piece of software. We're very proud of it. (blush)

Again, am really impressed you thought of it. Your post caught my eye and I though "woah, this person is thinking! Very nice".

So Ruth, when is your all singing and dancing Salon app going to be ready? A OS independent app would be great. openSUSE for me BTW.

@persianista, yes you are right. I apologise for taking this thread to a techy level. I think this forum is lucky to have a developer here as I'm sure we'll be able to provide input and 'tailor' how the software evolves to suit your workflow and requirements.

Thank you Rob, it sounds as though your company has thought this through very well :)

Seems like we have fairly similar philosophies when it comes to design (although I still like the reassurance of owning my server hardware and knowing that I have 100% control over the software installed on each server - guess I'm a bit "old school" in that respect LOL... But then I did start coding Java way back in 2000).

As soon as I can find the time to finish designing and coding the darn thing LOL! I did have 10 months from November 2009 to August 2010 spent working from home on salon type stuff, but ended up spending far too much time designing far too many websites way too cheaply, ran out of money and had to go back to contract work in an office to get my finances back in order! So ended up with a lovely content management system for salon websites but only a half-finished appointment booking system! Then figured that there was no way that I wanted to market an online appointment booking system until it was clustered across at least 2 servers.

So currently juggling a contract job in an office during the week with as much stuff as I can fit in evenings and weekends!
