Hi there,

I have been having my hair highlighted for about a year now and am light blonde, however it is getting rather expensive so I am contemplating colouring my hair myself at home. I live near a shop which sells professional quality/salon use hair bleaches, toners, conditioners etc near me so I can get hold of the strong bleach etc, just not sure if its possible to do!

My hair would be naturally med brown - dark chestnut colour. As a non-proffessional I would obviously not be able to do highlights in my hair so am thinking i would have to do all over colour - as my hair is blonde from the years worth of highlights could do my roots all over with maybe 30 vol bleach and then touch up the re-growth as it comes through? Or is this just completely wrong lol?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated - thanks so much :)

Oh God please don't.

All over blonde is a very different look to highlights, and this will be a nightmare for you.
Please don't attempt an application of bleach on yourself, the tiniest overlap and your hair will probably break.
A cost effective option is to be a model for trainees either in a salon, or at a college. Much safer than attempting what you propose.

i second dawn , i doubt you will get anything nice looking and am sure you will wreck your hair , please go to a college and get a level 3 student to do it , it wont cost the earth and they know the products to use

thanks for your replies....guess that option is off the table then!

Would an all over Permanent Colour from the shops work? Like if I chose the lightest shade of blonde? I know the lightener wouldn't be strong enough to completely lighten the dark roots but if I did those every few weeks i'm thinking it could gradually lighten up without the blending issues? Sorry - i know this is probably another stupid idea lol

I will have a look into the college students idea, but part of the issue I have is that I live in the middle of nowhere so trying to save on Petrol costs too  Might have to go back to brown afterall

You really are determined to ruin your hair.

I am sure there must be a way of finding a hairdressing student locally.

If I had to make a choice of broken off hair, or a bus ride, I know what I would choose. Also remember that good colour correction is extremely expensive. I know because I do it for a living. Hair DOES break, I see ruined hair every day, and the upset and distress it causes.

Wow, certainly did not intend to annoy with my questions, honestly looking for genuine advise. No not determined to ruin my hair atall, just trying to work out a cheaper alternative to keep my hair blonde without all the associated costs.

If there was a bus that came anywhere near where I live I would of course choose to use that but unfortunately no bus near me  And with 2 young children I was simply looking at other possible options that could be done at home to fit around my family as well as save a few pennies.

Sorry again if I have caused annoyance with my query and thanks again for taking the time to reply to my questions.

Hi HannahSpanner,

I know, they are not very friendly to DIYers on here, its your hair you know it best, at least you are trying to get some advice!

Good luck.

This is a professional forum. Please read the commandments of a geek to understand the forum rules. We do not give DIY advice.

Why not ring around some local salons and see if they do model nights?

We don't mean to be rude on here, and we are not fans of diyers aswe see the damage diy jobs can do on a daily basis.

also you could phone the college and ask if any hairdressing students need models for assesments .. explain you cant get there and tell them you are happy for them to come to you and you will pay the college price etc.. ... i would have done that when i was a student and the more heads you work on the better .. granted you mgiht be unsure but if you have a level 3 student they are fully qualified anyway xx

Now this is great advice, my local salon did FREE cuts and colours to models on certain days, worth ringing around for!

I understand DIYing must be a pain for hairdressers and really appreciate the advice that you give everyone but some peoples attitudes are intimating and the reason why people start the diying in the first place. Especially on forums you can't tell how the comment is meant and does come across rude.

It is not about being friendly/unfriendly to DIYers.
It is about being honest on what the outcome will be.

If you cant get to a local school/college etc maybe you could get a mobile hairdresser to come to you? or maybe even a trainee student in the area?

I know even with my own hair i get one of the girls in the salon to do it.
If i could do my own back of my head well.. i would be on to a winner lol

Good luck :)

Oooh please DO NOT bleach your own hair if its not done properly you could end up with patchy, orange, snapped hair...not a good look!:hug:x

I used to do this and always found the end result fab. They are being assessed on the work they do and are closely guided by a professional. I used to feel guilty about paying so little. I once had a colour and Cut for £12!!!!

Honestly give this a go x
