Hey all! I have recently qualified as an l and p creative tech and have been doing clients from home, spoke to someone the other day about setting up a room in my home permanently and she said ' is there not some sort of rise in council tax if you do this?' and to be honest it had never crossed my mind, does anyone know anything about this and whether it is true or not as i don't? xx

think you will have to contact your local council as each is different, think they may be confused with business rates which normally apply if you are using a room that has a separate entrance with own hand washing & toilet facilities or a small out building.

yeh maybe you are right hon, best to check it out myself, she probably just got it mixed up x

Every Council is different, ours take everything to the letter, so they say that if you have more than 5 or 6 people coming to your house as a result of your business then it's deemed as business use. You then have to go for change of use and get slapped for business rates - even if it's a room that you use for domestic use as well ie a dining room.

There again, what the bigwigs don't know won't hurt them! (oops did I really put that, slapped wrists!)
