Hi,
I've searched through old threads but most of them relate to home salons that are actually within the house. I am thinking about converting our shed (which is currently an office as we converted it a few years ago) at the bottom of our garden. Clients wouldn't have to walk through the house as we have a side gate to the garden. It's a good size, already has wooden floors etc. We do have a water supply at the bottom of the garden for a hose, so I would need to have the pipes extended a few meters to reach the shed.

I've got a feeling that this may be more difficult to set up than if i was using a room in the house though. I will check all this out with the council when i have more of an idea what I'm going to do, but wondered if any of you have set up a home salon in a room that isn't actually attached to your house? What kind of problems have you encountered with the council if any? Would you recommend this?

Any comments appreciated xx

im looking into having a log cabin errected in my garden at the mo to use as a salon. had email back from planning which states i can errect the log cabin, much bigger than i initially thought! it states if its main use is for work i would have to apply to planning for change of use. and they decide on car movement, and noise levels mainly. you will have no noise and only one person at a time, not really much different from having a few friends visit each day? if you used it as a shed mainly, you could get around needing a change of use, but it you store your equiptment in it and use it for work, its main use would be business, so you would need change of use. environmental health told me you need a sink with running water, they dont like clients to use family sink due to cross contamination. But they will however allow them to use your family toilet, if you have a sanitary disposable unit?! you need yellow bags too for waxing.
the probs come when you get your change of use- if your shed is insulated with polystyrene - building regs wont allow it at all. all electrics/plumbing must be certificated. Health and safety checks.
im still going for it, it will take ages, will cost loads, but its my goal and im one determined lady when i want something.
saying all this each council is different.
hope its of at least some help?

I really want to do this to! Have u done it??

Every council have diferent rules your best contacting them. If you use a shed or log cabin you also have to rememeber heating!!!!!

I have a logcabin as my salon my ladies love it and feel really at home and relaxed!!

As for the council i spoke to them before it was built and was told i didn't need any sort of planning at all jusr goes to show that all councils are different !!

good luck with it i love mine x

I've done the same with half of our garage - again accessed through a side gate off the drive so clients don't have to come into the house. I phoned the planning officer at the council twice to keep checking and they just weren't interested and said just go for it - loads of people work from home - although they did say that if anyone complained I would have to apply for retrospective planning permission. Most people in my road haven't a clue what I'm doing anyway and I've been going for five years!
