As a newbie soon to train as a nail tech, I am wondering how you all keep your own nails looking fab - it's obviously a great advertisement for your business when your nails are tip-top, do you manage to do both hands yourself, or do you do have someone else do it for you??

Don't know if it makes a difference, but I also have psoriasis which affects my nails, so from having had them done in the past I know I have to have the nail bed supported while the nails are being worked on, I guess this would make it harder to do my own too, eh?!?!

welcome to the site Rainbow :)
it isn't easy when you first start to do your own nails... it all comes with time, lots of practice, and a lot of mistakes and crappy looking nails to begin with.
it all depends on what i am trying to achieve with my nails as to how long it takes me, sometimes 90 mins other times 3 or 4 hours, wine depending ofcourse lol, i normally sort my nails out in the evening :D after buffing 'here and there' during the afternoon.

as far as having the nail supported whist doing your own, I find working on a hard surface the best way, i'm normally at the table or using a lap-tray on the sofa with all my paraphernalia spread around me lol

I generally have to put tips on my right hand as my left hand wont do as I want it to and if I try to sculpt onto my right hand it looks like I have had a couple of white cornflakes stuck to the nails. So if I want to practice sculpting then I put sculpts on my left hand and tips on the right hand. If you put the hands side by side together you can tell the slight difference, but how often do you lay your hands down side by side for someone to scrutinise? Generally people will look at one hand or the other so having different things on different hands is never noticed. It also comes in handy if you are trying to show people the difference between your sculpts and the tips, helps them choose what they want. Although mostly I have to say that people are generally fine about leaving the choice to me. I then take into account the shape and length of their natural nails before I decide whether to sculpt on tip. HTH

A handy tip when ever appying anything to your own nails, be it polish, sculpting or whatever is DO THE DIFFICULT HAND FIRST! we all tend to do the easy one first, and then we get to the other one when our patience is running lower, and you're also trying to do your difficult hand with longer nails that you have just applied on your easy hand.

I always give this tip to clients when applying polish - your difficult hand is bad enough, but if you are trying to do it when the polish is wet on the easy hand then it makes it ten times more difficult.

Blimey, I hope that made sense!

Its very hard at first, I am getting happier about doing my own nails now I have been doing it for some time. I used to one hand one evening and the other hand the next (this was while I had very few clients lol!) Now I can manage to do my own with tips in 2 hours but it takes me a lot longer with sculpts ... 3 - 3.5 hours. Like anything in life, practice makes perfect, so its down to time and effort love ... but worth it once you realise you can do your own better than the salon down the road can do :)

That makes brilliant sense, I'll do that from now on, Thanks Sas

Ive been doing my own nails for about 6-7 years now, so im fairly confident, however i have to say that i really hate doing my own nails! But i get them done in about 1hr, sometimes less/more depending on what im doing to them. I can tip or sculpt them, but if im in a hurry i'll tip them. As for working with them, well, they get ruined after a couple of days, with all the filing, getting acrylic or glue etc stuck to them. But its a perk/downfall of the job, and at least i can fix them when i get a moment!

This is a fab tip - when I did acyrlic I always did my easy hand first then lost the will to live before I could complete the hard one!
I did my own nails yesterday with Brisa gel and glitter tips (not a great piccy - please ignore my knarled hands!)

I did the hard hand first and then doing the easy one felt like a piece of cake - Thanks Sass KxXx
