Salon owners/employers - I am trying to decide whether or not to go to college and do beauty therapy or continue to do further short courses myself. I currently have a spray tan and eyebrow definition diploma and will be doing waxing next month.

If you were hiring someone would you chose someone with a college qualification over someone who has gone through individual qualifications?
 
College sounds better tho doesn't it?
 
I did the short courses route, realised I didn't have nearly as much knowledge as I needed and have gone back to college to do nvq as an evening course. I also contacted a local salon to me to ask what qualifications they wanted and they specified nvq. Hope that helps :)
 
Yeah when I joined Salon Services they said I needed an NVQ Level 2 minimum entry... But in Ireland it's just a junior qualification... Maybe you will get so much more information and questions answered if you go to college.

I accept staff without an NVQ. Some of the best people I have had have not had an NVQ and simply certificates from companies
 
I would request a minimum of level 2 beauty, not short courses x
 
I would or do request ITEC beauty specialist at the very least which is I think level 2, ideally you want a complete 2 year qualified therapist.

Not to be mean with regards to course content but the hotel I worked with and clientele we deal with are a completely different ball game to your corner salon and a short course therapist usually lasted a week before resigning themselves.
 
I have a level 3 minimum, I wouldn't employ someone who didn't have at least a college level A&P - which is usually bare minimum but enough for me to build on. I once employed someone who had written her CV rather cleverly but it soon transpired she had attended a 13 week course with only one day per week! She was so out of her depth in a salon environment we had to let her go almost as soon as she arrived. Fast track and short courses are not the best start and ultimately you could end up spending the same amount. I also get newly qualified therapists applying for positions expecting to start on very high wages because their trainer told them that's how much they could earn, but omitting that that's after a few years experience.

Look at all the courses available and remember, if it sounds too good to be true, walk away.
