Hi advise please , I qualified back in november level 2 will be finishend level 3 july time. Do you think i should stick to doing my friends hair for now? when do you know your ready to go mobile!

Hiii, my advise would be to get a good few years experience in a salon before going mobile. In hairdressing you are constantly learning new things but i think its wise to experience busy salon life first as this will give you the confidence & knowledge you will need for working alone! Mobile hairdressing is great in many ways, choosing your hours, good money(if you're busy)etc. However, the down side is that you dont have any work mates to help you out if you're not sure about something, you need the knowledge & the confidence to deal with every aspect of hairdressing alone. I wish you lots of luck for when you do go mobile!:hug:x

I agree.. You really do need the Salon experience first, you can learn a great deal from working with different collegues and customers. Not saying it's impossible to do but I think Salon experience is invaluable. Good luck :). Xxx

I made the mistake of going mobile first and it didnt work out. I now manage a salon and am learning all the time from the other more experienced hairdressers.

I went mobile last year after completing my level 2. I did a year placement in a salon, and did half my apprenticeship 13 years ago in a salon so I know the ups and downs of both college training and salon training.

The Mobile work is building up and I'm doing quite well 9 months on, but if I had the choice I would have gone to work in a salon first absolutely, there's no substitute for the experience you get from working in that environment, you get to see pretty much all range of clients and problems to solve etc that you just don't get out on your own.

I am 36 and unfortunately it's really hard to get into a salon when you're older, plus i have a young child not yet in school so i can't couldn't commit to an employer anyway at the moment. I did really well in my salon placement last year and the owner was going to give me a job, but because I was upfront with her and said I was going to be working for myself too she said she couldnt risk taking me on incase I stole her clients! (which i would not do,) i was going to work just saturdays and cover holidays but she made her excuses and it didnt come off in the end.

I do enjoy choosing my own hours, but I am always on here, especially with colouring as i feel i am so under confident when it comes to colouring a new clients hair and choosing colours etc, so i am forever asking advice.

You do what you feel is best for you, I was very nervous starting out at first, but my cutting (which is my favourite thing) has really come on and I no longer feel really nervous when cutting a new client's hair, I just had to get on with it and do it afraid as they say!
Hope everything works out for you X :)

I wasn't ready until I had 8 years salon experience  But it meant I had a good client base as they tracked me down and was fully booked 6 months in. I just felt that I had dealt with a lot of the problems that can arise, and felt confident enough in my abilities to cope with difficult clients and any problems with the hair etc.

I would really advise getting at least a couple of years salon experience first, then go from there. Good luck!

I did 9 years before I went to do freelance. Plus if something went wrong in the salon the staff assisted in correcting it but when your out there on your own your pretty much left to your own devices and you gotta know how to sort little mistakes out yourself.
