hi, what are your thoughts on being qualified in hair and beauty and doing this on a day to day basis. My lecturer says its not practical to do both and you should concentrate on one or the other but i want to do both!
Is he mad ??? No point having all your eggs in one basket. Offer everything & anything you can. I only do nails but the amount of people who say they wish I did spray tans / hair etc is a lot...
If people listened to other people they would never do anything... Just go for it if you find you dont like one or the other then stick to one thing but If I would you I wouldnt - Nothing like having a bit of variety in your life.
I qualified in both but that was some time ago now, and I know from my teaching career in FE that there are very few courses around now where you can do both.
It used to be that the brighter students were fasttracked and did hair and beauty, less able girls did one or the other.
My advice would be to look at this long term - are you likely to want to train in both at some point? Training costs are fortune so get what you can, now.
I trained in both. I work as a hairdresser though. I think it is hard to have credibility across all trades.
It depends really what level you want to work at really.
hi, thanks for the advice, basically i qualified in hair 14 years ago but regretably didn't stick with it got a job with better money, but now am training in college in evenings with beauty. I have an ambition to retrain in hair after finishing beauty in june 2012, but lecturer thinks i can't do the two as it's not practical, but i want to do mobile and maybe open my own salon a few tears down the line and i think the more i have to offer the better my chances are. I have just down my spray tan training and feeling really happy at moment with getting all good feedback. Who says you can't do it all i'm going to ignore her and do it anyway.
Training the evenings is hard going. I'm going to revise my initial advice and say I think your lecturer is probably right. Do one at a time - especially if you are paying for yourself. You stand a better chance of success that way.
I know you probably want to get everything done and out of the way and are keen to get going but it's much better to do things "gradually" and make sure you get well-qualified.
Go with what you want to do that way if it doesn't work out you will find out for yourself. Personally I think if you want something bad enough then you will make it work. I can't see why it won't. Everyone needs their hair done. People can do the majority of beauty treatments to themselves. So one way or another you will always be busy. I'm going to college to do hair next year.
Good luck Hun xx
Thank you for asking the question I wanted to know, I am also qualified in Beauty and done this in evenings, but I was a hairdressing junior when I left school for 2 years, in 3 different salons, and I was too young and found it hard but now im 27 and ambicous I want to go back to college in aug to do hair, and do both mobile eventually, I have lots of clients asking if I do hair, so yes I say it can work, go for it!
I have just spent 2 years at college doing beauty and spa therapy. i rent a space in a hair salon and decided to go back to college to do hairdressing. i dont see why you cant do both and still have professional credibility.
when i have qualified as a stylist i will need to make a decision as to what i want to do as the salon are full stylist wise,
i do agree that it would be too hard to study beauty and hair along side each other as there is so much to take in on each side.
good luck in your beauty training and hope it works out for you xx
Hi, I trained in both and qualified but didn't like the colouring cutting side of hairdressing.
