Hi i've recently had an interview with a college in my area that have said i would be suitable for both the Full time NVQ Level 2 Fastrack in hairdressing as well as an apprenticeship doing the same thing. Which in your opinion would be better? And also if i were to go for the apprenticeship route how do you suggest going about finding a placement in my area? writing, emailing, phoning or going in personally? Thanks for your help

Stylists trained by apprentiship are paid more throughout their careers and are much more employable. If you can find an apprentiship then grab it with both hands.

Try local paper, gumtree, craigslist, connexions, job centre, internet and anywhere else you can think of.

Do a nice CV and post it to all the salons in your area that you like the look of.

Also worth glamming up and popping in to ask if they are recruiting trainees and leaving your CV.

Good luck, and I hope to be welcoming you to the world of hairdressing xx

I used to work for headmasters, they have their own training school and after working there and seeing the quality of their trainees I would advise anyone that lives near one to try and get an apprentrship with them www.hmhair.co.uk or if not try and find a good salon that want to train you to work for them, this way they will take an interest in your training and not just use u as a cleaner...I have heard of a lot of people coming out of full time college and struggling to get work as they have no experience.

I did a year as an apprentice last year while all my friends went to collage and i would say the training is probably to a higher standerd as an apprentice but at a very very slow pace, they were supposed to be fast tracking me as i was already 18 and when u reach 19 they have to pay min wage rather than 95 pound per week, however my training day was on a monday then the rest of the week including saturdays (which you dont work if you go to col) i scrubbed floors, cleaned the toilets, got the stylists dinners, made coffee n tea n washed up from 9.30-7.30 some days with a boss speaking to me like rubbish allday!so for me a fast track hairdressing course would be what id chose but thats just from my experience and im sure not all apprentrships will be like this x Hth x

i think if you can get into a salon for an apprenticeship it is better, however i think it does depend on the aprenticeship that you can get, some salons may treat you like a cleaner and not really train you at all, i think the best situation would be too do the fast track course and either volunteer or try to get work in a salon the rest of the time, for example i do 3 days at college, then im in a salon 2 days and work for money the rest and do a bit of mobile :)

Hope this helps

xx

I would suggest doing whatever u feel is better for you! I gained a little expierience in salon to decide how I felt then enrolled in to a fast track 12 month course which was 3days a week then worked in a small back street salon 3 days a week getting extra input! I ended up qualifying in3 months as college was great and I worked really hard! I soon after started working as a graduate stylist in a 5star salon so i missed out the junior bit! where i got fantastic further training and worked my way up! I would never have been doing what I am now had I done an apprentaship with in a salon and no where near as quickly! It really just depends on your lifestyle and how determined u are to achieve!

Wow things have changed since I trained! To be fair that was 1995! Lol we either had apprentership for 2 Yeats or full time college for 2 years....the last post sounds like a great option :)
