I need you help Geeks

I saw lady on saturday who had the following nail problems;

- severe lamelar dystrophy (you can see the various layers of the nail plate as they are that jagged)
- senstivity to heat around and behind the epoynicium area
- longitudal furrows with some split

she was so embarassed about the condition of her nails she didn't even want me to see them

she is a lovely woman how takes a great pride in her appearance and I want to be able to try and help her to treat her nails back to a better condition.

plus She wants to avoid enhancements if possible

so please tell me what is or are the best products to help these poor nails?

Thanks all

Hi Louise

Poor nails!

Getting these into shape naturally will be such a long job with no guarantee of success. She cannot keep her hands totally out of water and I am sure will get fed up long before any real progress is made.

I suggest you explain about an overlay as this could be the quickest and easiest way to get the bad nail grown out and get to the good nail (the splits may never improve) This may only take a short time with maybe the overlay getting thinner and thinner rather than infils. By this time the nail has grown protected and nourished with oil.

One idea anyway

Hiya...How has this happened...Has she been ill..or on any medication..?

Would she be better seeing a dermatologist or even GP...I think getting to the root of the problem might be better at this stage rather then trying to make good what is so bad...otherwise arnt they just going to keep growing like this...Isn't cure better than cover up.

There must be a reason why her nails are like this..how long have they been like this..?

Can you see any improvement in the new nail growth or are they the same from epoynicium to free edge...?

I don't think i would feel happy putting anything on those till they have been checked out. Best of luck xxxxx

Thanks Marian, I was a bit worried about an overlay but as there is no infection present where the Onlychorrhexis occurs i might try and convince her.

My only worry with this service would be how would you remove cuticle as they are so badly ridge there is no way I could preform a ususal prep with a dual tool/pusher? As missing this would surely lead to lifting or does cuticle not emerge on a nail with so many conditions?

nope asked all this no meds or illness

I thought this initally then reserved my judgement as I thought it was just severe lamellar dystrophy but its more than that and I think now she might have to go for cover up as there is no sign of a infection.

for many years she used to be a nurse hence the constant exposure to water...

none what so ever this seems to be a a matrix problem resulting in onychorrhexis

- I think its okay to put an enhancment on as their is no infection or broken skin

Its the worse case I have seen yet but hopefully it will make me a better technician, thanks for the help Angie its appreciated.

Hi Louise

I think mum gave some excellent advise there and i totally agree, i would go for a silk wrap or a soak off gel overlay. Keep it nice and thin and sell it to her as a protective layer rather than and enhancement. Plus lots of solar oil and maybe some cu3 re nu for the cuticles?

As for prep you will just have to maybe use a white buff block and hope for the best, i agree with you i don't think she would like you to do usual prep.

Good luck with this one Louise and some pictures of the progress would be great if you can talk her into it. A very interesting case IMO.

isnt it!

I hope I get to help her with this.

I've done a manicure so far and I know she would love to sort this out but i am not sure if she is able to give the financial commitment.

Hi Louise

This doesn't sound like any major problem; just a collection or minor conditions on delicate or weak nails.

If it is how you've described it a little overlay help may just get over the problem. There is no reason why the ridges should interfere with good prep, just be gentle. Don't flatten the ridges, just make sure prep is perfect and build the overlay so ther is enough depth over the ridges so, when finishing, you don't buff through the overlay to the top of the ridge.

I think the suggestion of a fibreglass, or even just the resin, could be good as it is so gentle. If you get a bit of lifting in zone 3 either side of the ridge this is just caused by not removing the 'shine'. Try using the corner of a white block just to get (gently) into the crevises.

Good luck. You can do it! Good tectnicians can do, almost, anything
