Hi Guys
Wondered if any of you have ever worked for a hairdressers that use shop bought hair dyes when doing their color services?

Obviously it is not good practise but is it illegal?

I have just started working at a place who have been using box colors and kitchen foil for their clients hair... not sure what to do as I will never learn a color system if I just nip round to boots for the closest hair match color!!!!

Any thoughts?

RUn a mile!
this is not a professional place to work and you risk your reputation being there!
xx

Run yes! Are they professional hairdressers? I doesn't sound like it! Your reputation will lose all credit, so yes get out of there!

I watched a programme about a hairdressers/ beauty salon run out of a wooden hut in a South African slum, this lady used professional colours & products.
Surely the salon owner you work for could get hold of some too!
That's awful you can't work there if you want to have any credibility as a professional stylist hun xx

god if people off the street can get hold of proffesional products so can the owner....i would not work there...RUN!

It took me a while to get this position - she opened her salon only recently, do you think should I ask her when she is going to get a professional color range in?

Or perhaps I should just start trawling for jobs again :(

this is absolutely disgusting!!!! what are they using for skin tests? the owner needs to be reported and you need to get the hell out of there! Its not a professional place to work and will do nothing for you apart from damage your rep!!!!! x

Start looking for another job straight away, because just opened or not this is totally unprofessional and any credible hairdresser wouldn't even think of doing this :-(

Whilst it's not illegal it is very strange.

Is she a trained hairdresser? I only ask because I've never met anyone in my life who, once they have learned about professional colour, then chooses to use a box colour. It costs more, it's less effective and the results really limit your creativity.

I'd have thought the first thing she would have been getting excited about is choosing a colour and retail line when she opened her salon. There is no better feeling than a load of boxes arriving with your new stock and shrink wrapped brand new shade charts for you to look through.

The only reason I can think of that someone would miss that opportunity would be if they either didn't know about professional colour (i.e. didn't understand it) or they were afraid of it (due to lack of knowledge).

Perhaps you might ask her if she'd like your help in choosing a good colour-line for the salon, and explain to her that you have used a few good ones that cost less per application than using box-colours and give better results too?

I think I will approach her and just try, tactfully, to suggest a colour range.

I know she is a specialist in Afro hair, weaves, wig making, etc but not sure of her quals (I didn't interview her! She interviewed me! :))

I am still training so feel a bit awkward to judge but its either that or get outta there.

(Our main stylist, who is quite good, doesn't speak great English also feels uncomfortable but they haven't got the confidence to talk to owner (and suspect they really need the job))

They are a really nice bunch so wish to stay so wish me luck next week!

PS
Classixuk - yep, we used two box colors on a client yesterday which I am sure would have been cheaper to use a professional range... crazy! Also, what would be a good range to demonstrate cost effectiveness (I use Wella, which is good but I think fairly pricey) - heard Affinage is a quality cheap make????

Thats really bad and ridiculous- there are plenty of budget salon ranges which are perfectly good... and far more proffesional than using 'box dyes'
XP 100, and Ion are both cheap (around £4 a tube for 100ml - there's really no excuse- i would look elsewhere x

How does your client choose what shade they'd like to be if you havent any shade charts? Xx

They have a shade chart (NXT), client choose chocolate brown and ... the box color was chocolate brown!

I spoke to the owner about professional colors and skins tests.... She was OK - she knew all this needed to be sorted! She said she wanted to discuss it with our main stylist who has the most experience with coloring and then purchase some stock. I know she went out and bought some peroxide so I am hoping that this will be sorted and is a one off.

I am in at the end of the week again so if it has'nt been sorted, I will sit with the stylist (who speaks limited English) and make a list ready to present to her.

Thanks for encouraging me to speak to her, I am hoping she will get it sorted and I won't have to change jobs as the stylist is great and I am learning loads.

WHAT???? I have never heard of this, ridiculous, expensive and dangerous as box colours have a chemical in them that most salon colours dont how the hell can they guarantee what colour it will give them too as they have no idea what is in the box / packet. As everyone says: RUN.

I have never!!!!!!!!!!!!! but as you are looking for advice.. I think you are happy to stay and if the salon owner is happy to listen to you and take on board.. get her to ring a hair colour distributor to come and speak to her.. I would still be very worried about the professionalism and experience you will gain from this salon? best of luck with this... you will need it :-(

This is absolutely outrageous and unprofessional to the nth degree.

It sounds to me as if your boss is frightened, or cannot afford, to buy a professional colour line.
It's not illegal - in fact you don't need any hairdressing qualifications to open a hairdressing salon ...
It *is* unethical, and you won't gain a thing by working there.
I'm in Stafford, only a few miles from you , and I'm ashamed that this is going on on my 'patch'.

Run like hell ... immediately - and tell your boss why ...
Good luck :)
