I have a client that I only ever see at birthdays, hols, occassions etc.
Last night she brought her daughter for a birthday pamper/nail art.
At the end of the session she showed me her own nails which had quite a bit of free edge (for her) but her index fingers hook & slope away to the side and were short.
She asked my advice and I told her that i dont think she will ever be able to grow those successfully due to the nature of the steep curve at the free edge.
She then said sometimes her other nails peel at the free edge. I had retailed her Toughen Up in the past but she said it hadnt helped.
Any ideas guys?

I have a client whose nails naturally curve dramatically under but now they grow out straight as long as she doesn't leave the enhancements off for too long. I started her off by filing the free edge right down then applied a very short enhancement. As her nails grew out, they grew in line with the enhancement so now she has her own nails with just an overlay & they look perfectly normal. She's been having them for about 2 & half years now. If these nails grow to the side it would probably be more difficult but you could try short enhancements, just watch that it isn't putting too much strain on the nail or it could possibly lead to onycholysis if the shape is too different.

As for the splitting, Solar Oil!

Just read about this in Doug Schoon's book, the top layer of nail cells are about 2 months older than the cells underneath and have been more abused since they have been exposed longer. Solar oil used on a daily basis will have more benefit than a polish based strengthener. The oil will help plastisize and prevent delamination or peeling. HTH

The only thing that will give hook nails a more regular shape is to keep the natural nail short and sculpt the shape you want. Tipping will still make the nail appear hooked. Unfortunatly there is no real permanent correction as this is most likely the state of the matrix... (I see it a lot in people that have crushed/ damaged their fingers etc)
Solar oil is definatly the prescription for peeling. Lots of regular application.
(new solar balm would be another great option)
