Hi geeks, so I've been practicing loads for the last 3 months, here are my own nails I did last night. Do you think they would be good enough to charge for? Constructive criticism welcomed x

Hello anybody?

I'm newly qualified so can only really speak from personal opinion rather than technical but if I was a paying customer I'd be happy with the result. Perhaps if you're not 100% confident you could advertise for models and charge a nominal fee to cover your costs and a little extra. Good luck

What are we critiquing? Tip and overlay? sculpts? Dip & Buff? Gel Polish? NNO? Gel or L&P

Tell us what corrections you would make and what you see that needs improvement too

Thanks for reply girls, they are gel extensions using tips so at the minute I'm just trying to focus on the shape and technique. I know my gel polish application was a bit messy but I'm more concerned about the overall shape x

OK. Gel polish definitely needs work, you have endless time to refine your polish application before curing so no excuses for it being on the skin or touching sidewalls etc. Use an orangewood stick or small brush dipped in IPA to remove from skin before curing.

With regard to enhancement application, they're not bad, I've give you a 7 out of 10. You need a little more product at the stress area, they're a little too flat, not much at all, but if you put them understress from underneath I suspect they would snap at the stress area.

I'd prefer to see them before gel polish as it's hard to see the application at cuticle etc. There looks like some further side wall refinement is needed on the ring finger but I can't tell if it's Gel Polish or the gel. and the thumb looks bumpy but again I can't tell if it's reflection in the Gel Polish or the gel overlay.

Free edge is nice, some are slightly more tapered into the ballerina shape than others, length is nice.

Nice work :D

Thanks trinity, might I add I had 2 large glasses of wine in me while doing these lol, il aim for an 8 before xmas. I have 3 live models next week plus my nail trainer. Don't feel confident yet to charge but il get there x

I love the shape, the polish application is fair, could be a little closer to the cuticle though. Like trinity said, a little more product in the stress area, apart from that, a very good set!

Hi girls, I redid my thumb, here it is without polish, trinity what do you think? Xx

Nice! Much better, I'll give you the 8/10 your were aiming for :D

The free edge is slightly wonky, shorter on the right than left, not surprisingly when doing your own nails, its virtually impossible to get the right angle, and there is lifting down the right sidewall, probably from gel touching skin.

Lovely cuticle application, slightly straighten the bottom edge at the smile line and I'd push to a 9 ;)

Yay, do you see the way the nail slightly leans to the right? Should I file straight across or leaning to the right? Hope that makes sense x

Personally i straighten the nail so it 'looks' right, not in line with the way it grows. The human eye looks for symmetry, so for nails to look good they need to be as similar as possible. Thats why we leave a small margin arount the nail when painting with polish or gel polish, you create the same beautiful cuticle line on all of the nails even if the natural cuticle is slightly odd shaped. That way the eye sees 10 perfectly shaped nails but in reality one or two could be uneven. Obviously if you look closely they are not perfect but no-one but you and your client ever get close enough to see it, and even if they do, their brain will struggle to see past the illusion you have created.

This is also why we as nail techs see imperfections on nails that clients don't....We've trained our brains to look past the illusion, its why we're harder on ourselves all the time

Thank you but I can only credit my skills to my training, I trained with CND, spent thousands and years and many many tears! Lol

So, Thank You Ketan Patel and Jacqui Messer (RIP)
