Im sorry if this has already been asked or discussed but I couldn't find it in a search. Just wondering what does everyone think is an appropriate age to start shellac on? I have had a 9 year old want it before but just advised the parent that she was much too young yet and she would be better off sticking with normal polish.

How young is too young for shellac? (And vinylux?!)

I use a gel polish & I wouldn't use it on a under 15, I originally thought 16 but had some 15 year olds who wanted nails done for prom.
As a mum of a 10 year old I can't believe a mother even asked about a 9 year old!
I guess everyone is different.

I wouldn't do it, I know some nail techs who practice on their 5 year old! Shocking! I'd say 16+ without parent and 15 and possibly 14 but only if their parent was there with them.

Ah what harm is a little treat going to do? My insurer says once a parental consent form has been filled out & proper service, it's fine :)

Yeah i agree its nice to have a treat but I just told her mail art would be much nicer to match her dress for a wedding. As far as I have read, people say once the parents say its fine just let them know you dont really advise it but if they insist then go ahead & do it! Same with gel nails, I would still much rather do shellac on a young girl than gel nails!

Weird youve asked that as i was just coming on here to post a thread on this xx
So what does everyone think ??xx
16+ on their own no younger than 14 with parental consent? Xx

Why would you not shellac a five ur old? It isnt damaging in any way!

I suppose a child is more likely to chew and pick shellac off their nails which may do some superficial damage.

Why would you want to so soak your 5 year olds nails with acetone. Their nails and skin are so delicate at that age. If i was going to do anything at that age it would only be regular nail polish until they're in secondary school at least x

What about when you have to soak it off? Are you okay using Acetone on a five year old? I'm certainly not and don't know many therapists who would.

You will get lots of different opinions on this, personally as a mum I wouldn't want to encourage such a high level of vanity with my 4 year old, naturally she is very interested as that's what I do. It's more about the adult nature of the process, start them on that too young and they will be way ahead of their peers in the future with wanting something more, Like extensions at 12? I personally wouldn't do these treatments for young ladies, I don't see the need myself there are so many things you can do without gel polishes, shellac, enhancements why not a lovely manicure and educate the young ones about looking after their nails ❤ each to their own!

Couldn't agree more! My daughter is 5 and like Gems-gems daughter, is interested in what I do. She even knows which colours are Gelish and which ones are Shellac. She knows that she can only have her finger nails and toes painted in school holidays and that she is only allowed 'normal' polish and she's happy with that, especially with a Konad stamp:)

Unfortunately my 3 year old son also wants to join in, luckily i have a Space Ship stamp on one of my stamping plates so that on his thumb seems to do the trick! Phew!!!x

I've put geleration on my neices toes, she wanted them for the school holidays.. She's 12. I don't see anything wrong with it at that age as long as its not on all the time.

There are lots of good reasons not to use gel polish on children, but perhaps the most compelling is that the manufacturers themselves state that they should not be used on children. You might read the paper from the PBA/NMC which states, "Further, like other nail enhancements, gels are not recommended for children." Here's the paper - http://files.nailsmag.com/Handouts/gel-manicures-pedicures.pdf

I trained in IBD JustGel and was told although it is totally down to the individual as to whether we have an age limit, the product is not suitable for young ladies as their nails are still so oily therefore the product is likely to chip within hours causing a possible complaint xxx

Luckily Shellac is not a gel!! 😊

I don't think it matters if shellac isn't a gel you still have to soak it off. I'd rather a nice polish and educate them on caring for their nails and skin. Each to their own though I guess.

No, you dont need to soak of shellac on a childs nails. Shellac is designed for adults and not the greasy little digits of kids. I often shellac my five yr olds nails as it's what we enjoy doing together but iv never once had to remove it frm her fingers as it never lasts long. Her finger nails are in waay better condition than her chewed up sisters, she even enjoys a drop of solar oil or two.

1. Yes, Shellac is a gel polish - the MSDS says that it is. It is not "just a gel," or 100% gel, but it is a hybrid gel polish.
2. CND also recommends not using it on children
